This is a "something for everyone" RF book. No matter where you are in electronics, this book provides basics, practical considerations, test, and troubleshooting information that can be put to immediate use. For beginning technicians or students, the book starts with a review and summary of RF basics, from a practical standpoint. This is followed by a chapter describing the practical considerations for RF (such as resonant-circuit design and thermal and mounting problems). With the basics established, the book provides two chapters devoted to implified testing and troubleshooting for RF equipment. The RF circuits from a cross section of present-day electronic equipment are chosen as examples. Not only do the chap ters cover the operation of fue RF circuit, but they descn"be testing and troubleshooting approaches for that type of RF circuit in step-by-step detail. For advanced technician or field-service engineer, there are two entire chapters devoted to advanced testing and troubleshooting for sophisticated RF devices such as frequency-synthesis (or digital) tuning and mobile AM/FM/SSB cornmunications equipment. A separate chapter covers RF test equipment, from simple substitute dummy loads for experimenters to measurement of FM deviation with spectrum analysis. Chapter 1 is devoted to a review and summary of RF basics, from a practical standpoint. Chapter 2 covers practical considerations for RF. Such subjects as calculating resonant-circuit values and mounting techniques for RF components are discussed. The main concern with RF er amplifiers in which thermal problems can arise in design and service. Chapter 3 is devoted to a review and summary of RF test equipment. Although the emphasis is on communications, a cross section of RF test equipment is discussed. Chapter 4 covers basic test procedures for RF equipment. These procedures can be applied to a complete piece of equipment (such as a transmitter) or to specific circurts (such as the RF Circurts in a receiver). The procedures can also be applied to RF circuits at any time during design or experimentation. Chapter 5 covers advanced test procedures. Here, the emphasis is on detailed checks for such sophisticated devices as mobile communications sets (CB, amateur, business radio, and cellular telephones). Chapter 6 is devoted to basic troubleshooting procedures for a cross section of RF circuits. The chapter emphasizes basic problems cornmon to all RF equipment. Chapter 7 covers advanced troubleshooting. Here, the emphasis is on sophisticated RF devices, such as digital tuning and mobile communications.
