Warts are skin growths that are caused by a virus. They frequently appear on the hands, neck and feet. When they occur on the feet, they frequently are painful. If they are on the bottom of the feet, they are called plantar warts. Warts are a virus and therefore they are very contagious and can spread from one person to another. We mostly see them on children and teenagers; however adults can also get them. You have to have 3 factors to get warts: you have to be the kind of person who gets warts, you have to have the virus in the area, and you have to have a cut somewhere on your body so that the wart can get into you. If you miss 1 factor, you will not get warts. Most warts are harmless and benign but they can be very sore. Sometimes the wart can press on a nerve and this becomes a very painful condition.
Plantar warts are flat, cauliflower, and hard lesions and can grow to be very large and cover a large portion of the foot. They are gray, black with little black pinpoints in the center and they frequently bleed if you trim them down too much.
Treatment consists of chemical cauterization with various acid, laser surgery, plastic surgery, or curettage. Remember warts are hard to get rid of and they frequently reoccur.
