Hammertoes
Hammertoes are a condition when the toes bend
down and the top of the toe rubs against the shoe. This causes an irritation
on the top of the toe and it becomes callused and very painful. Most
patients begin treating this themselves with callused removers. This is
very dangerous because the callous medication is an acid product that burns
and “eats” the dead skin. Frequently, the patient continues applying
the product until a severe infection and ulcer exposing the bone occurs.
I do not recommend these medications at all. Conservative treatment
can consist of applying a moisturizer and gently messaging the dead skin
of the toe. Other conservative treatment is wide shoes and soft pads to
keep the pressure off the toe. Medical treatment consists of cortisone
injections, custom made pads, and surgery. Hammertoe surgery for
corns is a very successful procedure and frequently preformed. If
you have any other questions, please ask me.
