There's been something like 9 pedestrians hit by cars in the last 7 days. I don't know who's fault it is, but I like to blame it on too many traffic lights.
It seems like each day more and more of the regulating lights pop up. They breed like rabbits. Oh look, we have two hundred metres of road and there isn't a traffic light for pedestrians to cross at all. Let's erect two, just in case. And no matter how fast/slow we drive, or any which side streets we take, it's one red right after another. I see this all the time. By the way, the average percentage of red vs. green from my house to the highway is over 50%. That means I stop at more red lights than green, every time I bother to count. So my theory is that because most people are forced to stop at traffic lights, they mentally feel they have to drive faster between them - and the jaywalking pedestrian is suffering for it. Plus, there's the real statistic that the population in Canada is growing older. The last two hit - one man in his seventies, while the lady was fifty-nine. Finally, most Canadian still think people walking have the right of way, and while that's true, most Ontarians doesn't even know how to properly proceed through a four way blinking red light (it's a stop sign for everyone, and when two cars stop at the same time, the vehicle on the right has the right of way. If both stop at opposite, then the one driving straight has the right of way. If one is turning right, and the vehicle opposite side is turning left, the left hand turn guy goes last.) See, I typed all that and I'm not even sure if I have it correct - save the very first part in brackets, so how can other people remember that the Homo sapien crossing the street shouldn't have to worry about having the Honda "H" branded into his backside. ....Look both ways before crossing the street. |
