Oh boy.
Sushi Kaji is a fabulous restaurant for people in the know. I've heard about it, and all my ritzy friends have been. The experience didn't come cheap. Basically, you get only 3 menus. $85, $100, or $120. That's it. I've had lots of cheap sushi, but after going to Kaji, I know I will have a very difficult time returning to buffet grade Japanese food. I never liked octopus before, but after eating it at Kaji, the flavour and butter smooth texture, not to mention how easy to chew it was - well I'm a believer. Everything that had to do with the food was exquisitely prepared. I really loved every morsel. I was trying hard to stuff down the last bit of food. It was so good and I didn't want to waste a drop of it. I even ate those big-bad fish eggs. The cheap-o kind always tasted like the feces of a sucker fish, but these red delicious roe was simply beyond description, especially when coupled with the fresh orange coloured uni. The thing is though, is Kaji sushi really worth the extra $80-90 premium that you pay over consumer grade sushi? That's the question I keep asking myself. Sadly, no. I guess at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter how fresh the fish is, I can't stomach paying another $150 dollar meal just so I can say the fish was flown over from Japan just twenty-four hours before. Still, I think it's something one should experience at least once in their lifetime, and then cherish that memory. But I wouldn't go back. ....Based on decor alone, you'd never expect it to be $$$. |
