There are times when I really am glad that I work for The Company, and this is one of them.
So The Company scheduled a golf day, which sold out within 9 minutes of posting. It shows how popular the event is. We played at The Club at Bond Head, which just opened this July. It is now rated at the toughest golf course in Ontario - a great way to kill any confidence I had at golf, since this course will forever be my inaugural introduction to the sport putting little white balls into a tiny hole. And man, what a day. We were treated like royalty. Truely, golf is for the rich, and for one day, I felt like a fat cat. We drove our car into the entrance of the clubhouse, greeted by a nice man with a clipboard and markers, after finding our names on the list, he directed us up the driveway and towards the front of the club house. We were then met with 2 people, one person who opened up our trunks and pulled out our clubs, while another found matching personalized name tags and tied it to our golf bag (mine being hand-me-down from the 1600s). He even commented that my clubs weren't "bad" after I made a wise crack about just how crummy my clubs were. You know you're at a posh joint when they kiss your butt even when both parties know it's being done. Egads, I could so get used to this. After they took our bags for us, we were off to park at the choice sections of the parking lot. Once settled, we walked to the side of the club house, and was greeted by The Company's organizers, who prompted handed out 1 set of 3 golf balls, and get this: a 1 GB Sandisk Sansa MP3 Player! Everyone who attended the event got one! They also directed us to a table with free tees, and we were encouraged to grab as many as we needed. I just grabbed a pack and left. We then were served a free BBQ lunch, consisting of hamburgers, hotdogs, chips and pop/water. Although it was my third BBQ meal in a row, the tasty burger with cheese could not be denied. Somehow free Dasani water tasted better and that much wetter. Bonus. After lunch, we quickly made our way to the driving range, where people were already practicing up a storm. The balls were complimentary of course. However, by the time I had arrived with my trusty 5 iron in hand, it was already overcrowded, so I ended up only hitting 4 shots. The only thing then was we needed to purchase balls. At $2 a shot for their own "logo" ball, it wasn't exactly cheap. However, they gave you a cute little leather pouch with each purchase, so it wasn't terrible. Plus, it was something I didn't realize I needed to purchase in advance, so c'est la vie. Soon, a voice came on the PA system: "Proceed to your golf cart." So we did. Everyone playing that day got were partnered up and there was a golf cart for every 2 people. Each cart had our names on paper, hung on the front of the golf cart. All our clubs were already loaded onto the back, and there were 4 bottles of water in the cup holders, and 6 burgundy wooden tees. All set for tee-off time. The format was thus: Two teams of 4 would start at a pre-designated hole. Bone Head had a total of 36 holes, a north and south side - each consisting of 18 holes each. We started as 10B on the North side, and would play the North holes all day. It was a blast. We played "scramble rules" which mean we each take a shot and the best ball determined by the team would be where everyone hit from - this went on, including putting on the greens. Man, I suck, and I don't say that to be humble, luckily we had Arlen, and he pretty much carried the team. Between him and Chris, they made most of the important shots. Me? I know wasn't going to be much help, but I did make 1 or two shots, and I actually saved par twice with clutch putts - purely flukes, I assure you. Anyway, it was an amazing time, and to end it off, we had a great dinner. I don't care what anyone else said, the dinner was good. The creme brulee was excellent, and when it's all said and done, we were full. Complaints? Sure. Six dollars for a beer is a little expensive, but other than that, not much else. Oh yes, there were also prize draws, including putters, golf shirts, lessons, DVDs, and even a bunch of gap wedges. A gap wedge sits between a long wedge and a pitching wedge. How useful is that was debated and laughed at mostly by me. You had to be there, considering it was 8-ball who won a gap wedge - odd, since it was the ONLY club he now owns. At least with a putter, you can practice at home or something. Finally, they drew for some nice LCD TVs, 2 32" Samsung LCD TVs, and 1 46"-er. Radready not only won a digital camera, but he also won the 46" TV, back to back draw! Lucky guy, him. I, in true losir fashion, didn't win jack. That makes near eight years with The Company, and I'm batting ZERO! I still haven't won a thing from Company events yet. Oh well! ....But that 1GB MP3 player, it's brilliant man. |
