I, like most computer geeks of our time, have always been in love with the doom and quake series of games. So when I obtained a copy of Quake 4 the other night, I was beyond eager to install and play - I was freaking bouncing off the walls with excitement.

What's strange is that I actually didn't install it until this morning, a whole 3-4 after getting a hold of the DVD.

I ran through the initial install screens and when it started copying files over onto the HDD, I showered. As I did so, I virtually beamed with anticipation and thought delicously how I will waste the rest of the weekend on nothing else other than to finishing this game. I showered quickly, forgeting to enjoy how hot and wet it was under the heavenly sprinkle. Instead I thought of nothing but DX9.0c and Shader 3.0 eyecandy, as the developers at Raven software takes me through 3D bliss.

I returned with a "finished installing" happy screen. Or maybe I was happy, doesn't matter. I was near shaking as I navigated the mouse cursor to the Play button and pressed.

Within seconds, I was greeted with the producers/developers splash intro. Great, great. G R E A T!

Before I began, I settled down with a can of diet soda, and clicked the settings button, changing the mouse settings, key settings, before reaching the video options.

I clicked the "automatic optimized settings" on the button and it returned a disgustingly low recommendation of a screen resolution of 640x480. I grimaced.

No matter, I know my system isn't a power rig by any stretch, and I've finished games on resolution such as that myself. "It's all about the gameplay." I kept chanting.

I launched the game proper, and then.... slideshow.

Gah! I can't even get a measly little 30 fps at 640x480. It's so choppy I can't play it at all. I promptly uninstalled and gave up - angry at how slow my system has become.

....Quake 3 still runs really good though. posted by losir at 8:20 PM
