I was feeling really sick last night, so I took the day off today. Nothing's really interesting going on, except that I have an upset stomach, and I got the chills last night. Pretty horrible stuff. Okay, not gangrene needs amputation gross, just a bad night of sleeping.
I've been thinking about rap music lately, because some facet of the media called Eminem's latest album and videos derivative. And while I don't make a habit of defending Emimen, nor would I need to, I realize just how stupid that statement was. The whole state of hip hop is stuck in a time warp of profanity laced gansta rap with increasingly more scantily clad women milling around the music video like it has artistic merit. It doesn't, and while I enjoy the eye candy as much as the next hot-blooded heterosexual male has a right to be without being called a perv, there are virtually no difference between each video. Heck, they even re-use the same "video" girls. I've seen two videos of the same girl, how much more of a "copycat" can you be? It is then I thought about punk rock, and how it's supposed to signify youth rebellion-ism. I listen to some punk, but usually mainstream stuff like Blink 182, Greenday and Simple Pan; not exactly the most hardcore group of rockers ever. And then there's Good Charlotte, who for me, is the poster child for Punk Lite. I mean, really, the break out song (in my opinion) was "Anthem", here's part of their lyrics: I don't ever want to be you. don't wanna be just like you what I'm saying is.this is the anthem throw all your hands up.you. don't wanna be you. Hmm, if everyone was throwing their hands up, wouldn't you all be alike? Gasp! No! Losir, hold me, say it ain't so. It is kiddies, it is. I guess what I'm saying is that there's no such thing as creativity left in the music industry. Everyone sounds like everyone else to some degree. I mean, if Linkin Park can rap Jay Z's lyrics, what's stopping some other black dude from rocking out - a la the 90's group, Living Colors. I mean, at least Eminem isn't plastering his vidoes with just women bouncing to the beat. Some videos now, the women are so lazy, they no longer dance! They just lounge around looking "hot" or "good", or whatever. I think music period is in a state of flatline, that's not to say I don't like the new stuff on the radio, as there are still good songs to drive to. I just think if people are waiting for the music wheel to be re-invented, they'll be waiting for some time. ....I'm still very sick. |
