Now, maybe I'm just weird (okay, I AM weird, but that's not the point), but I've always equated hardworking with overtime. I mean, if you're there after 5pm, then it shows you care about your job, especially a new job, right?
Compounded by the fact you're only on contract, with no guarantee of full-time status, wouldn't you give it your darnest to try and show just how grateful you are to land a job in this harsh economic desert? Now I ain't gonna name names obviously, although if you read this, you KNOW I'm talking about you. (~waves) I'm not passing judgement, I'm just trying to understand. Because YOU obviously do not. Getting you in wasn't a breeze, I had to grease and pull on friendships. Now my nose ain't so lofty that I'm getting a nose bleed, and there's no illusions of grandeur over my influence. Although ultimately it was you who got yourself hired (congratz by the way), I did put what little reputation (more hindrance than help??) I had into giving you a fair shake at an interview. True, if you were a full-timer, I could care less, as long as I got my referral bonus. Honestly, I didn't get a dime off you, and this ain't sour grapes. I'm glad just to have you here to pal around. So let me point out something small. We're not working at McDogs. This isn't your regular desk job. Ask anyone who's been anybody and they will tell you what it takes to stay at this Company. True, I'm not saying the Company is your sanctity. It will not save you, it really doesn't care about you, and neither of us are important enough for the Company to think twice about canning our sorry arse. Make no mistake, you got lucky. So stay lucky, pal, and show some love! I mean, perhaps I'm the delusional one here. Am I the one laying misguided thanks at the wrong set of feet? I'm sure people who onced toiled here read this and laugh, "losir, you don't even know what reward is." Maybe. I know I ain't striking it rich here. My role at this joint is nothing but plumbing to some. But I also know that without this job, I'd be flat on my behind; broke, tired, sorry, all of that. And I certainly wouldn't be riding no 929. Oh yeah, see the car in the back? Dreams.... All I'm really trying to say is, first week at work, I don't want to see you being 9 to 5. No, you're no rocket scientist, and the job doesn't require you to set up a bed here. But there's always work to be done, and there's still a lot to learn. I just can't imagine you've already mastered your job. Then again, maybe you have, and I'm the stupid one. It is entirely possible that you're too bright for your current position, and is already tired of the tedium. I am not at any stretch, putting you down. If that's the case, you should work doubly hard and get out, move to something more challenging. That's more reason to show management you are better than just grunt work. Heck, stay late and learn stuff. Heck, scrub the toilet or something. At least show you can pick up new skills. I'm not trying to be harsh, although you probably think I'm mean. I'm just saying that in my little pea-brain world, I'm constantly scared of everything. Therefore, my only solace is hard work and tenacity. No one to this day can call me a quitter. Well, at least not around here. ....Then again, I think you get in before 8am sometimes, while I'm still counting sheep.... bahhh! |
