Oops, forgot about updating my webpage, again.
I too finally saw the movie Shrek. Although it was highly amusing, I think it wasn't the gem for me as was for a lot of other people who "discovered" the film. A lot of the funnier sight gags were already seen in trailers, commercials, promos, including the gingerbread man, the Pinochiol (spelling, I know....) "I'm really a boy" gag, and a lot of others. The movie also painfullly reminded me that stereotypes cannot be avoided when viewing an American film, even if it's digital. Think about it: (SPOILER BELOW! IF YOU INTEND TO WATCH THE MOVIE AND NOT WANT KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT, STOP READING NOW!) The ogre represents the White Man, hence the need for the ogre to speak in a pitiful Scottish accent. The donkey, speaks in ebonics. His only survival asset (no pun intended) is kissing ass (groan....). So throughout the movie, he's portraying the poor black slave, needing his white master to save him from certain doom. "Yasaa Massa. I be doing anything you say, Massa." Maybe I'm reading into it, but that's the first thing I noticed. Also, towards the end, the donkey is declaring that he should own half of the swamp, because he did half the work in saving the Princess. The audience laughs because they all know he did next to bubkis in rescuing her, but now we can all poo-poo the situation because stereotypically, blacks are seen as leeches, often taking for what they didn't earn. Notice in real life, when white criminals commit a crime, they're not usually listed as white males.... but when a black guy carjacks someone, they always have to mention the fact s/he's black. Sad but mostly true. So was the movie entertaining? Yeah, it was. Do I recommend it? Yeah I do, but maybe you can wait for the video, as it's not a movie absolutely needed to be seen in all its movie glory. I'm sure the DVD version will be packed with goodies. ....solid 7/10 for the movie, just don't try to read too much into it. |
