The Fifty Worlds: NPCs

Herald of the Shining Dawn

Cliche warning!

No campaign setting would be complete without a virtuous female paladin, and here she is: Ylyema ay-Lupu, known as Herald of the Shining Dawn.

Ylyema loves shiny things, particularly Holy Swords and Helms of Brilliance.

[AD&D-Specific:] Ylyema ay-Lupu, human female, Str 18(97) Dex 15 Con 11 Int 12 Wis 17 Cha 18 Align LG Hp 87. Paladin, level 20.

Ylyema ay-Lupu comes from Megalopolis, and has no intention of returning. She is related to the noble ay-Lupu family, being a cousin of some sort of the current Duke. Traditionally, the men of the ay-Lupu family become rangers and the women, if they go adventuring at all, become clerics. Ylyema does not want to be part of that scene, preferring to do good in less covert and more spectacular ways.

Ylyema has no obviously magical way of getting from one place to another - no flying carpet or helm of teleportation. Nevertheless, the Gods have a way of making sure that she turns up when needed. Ylyema could reasonably show up anywhere except Megalopolis. If the wandering monster rolls go badly wrong and you have a party beset by dozens of vampires, it is entirely reasonable to have Ylyema show up and see them off.

Ylyema knows the rules and can count. Her ten magical items are:

  • +5 Holy Avenger Longsword
  • Sun Blade*
  • Mace of Disruption
  • Rod of Alertness
  • +5 Plate Mail
  • +5 Shield
  • Helm of Brilliance
  • Girdle of Cloud Giant Strength
  • Bracers of Archery
  • Ring of Shooting Stars

    * Ylyema's Sun Blade, named Sunrise, is Int 15, Ego 15, detects precious metals (20' radius) and gems (10' radius), and can speal any language(!). While holding Sunrise, Ylyema can also speak and understand any language. Sunrise is neutral good, not lawful good, in alignment, and thinks that Ylyema is rather dull and could do with lightening up (if you'll pardon the expression). From time to time, when Sunrise puts the words of a foreign language in Ylyema's mouth, it will include double entendres. Ylyema, innocent that she is, has no idea that what she is saying can be taken another way.

Ylyema ay-Lupu and Sullustia Furia are rivals. Although they are happy to cooperate in any lawful good cause, they are even happier when competing against one another.
