You are approached by someone furtive who claims to represent the Institutes of Atlantis. Her story is this:
Somewhere on the world of Salta, there is an ancient tome. The tome itself has no intrinsic value, but there is considerable civic pride to be gained by its successful recovery. Atlantis and Megalopolis both want it, and the Institutes of Atlantis and the College of Knowledge in Megalopolis are both sending parties of adventurers to retrieve it. May the best party win, and all that.
However, there is always the possibility that the best party will not win, and a backup plan is required. You are there for the backup plan.
If it should be the case that the Megalopolis party finds the book first, you should steal it from them. Having done so, somewhere along the way back to the starting point, you should find an inconspicuous way to hand the book over to the Atlantis party.
If the Atlantis party returns with the book, you will be well rewarded, regardless of whether or not you played any visible part in events. In fact, the less visible you were, the better.
The furtive contact claims to be able to arrange to take you and as many associates as you deem necessary to Salta and, if you so wish, bring you all back to Atlantis once the book has been recovered.
If you accept the commission, consult your DM for details of the adventure.
You are approached by a handsome and wealthy man of about thirty who gives his name as Tapeen Wswfirn. His story is this:
Somewhere on the world of Salta, there is an ancient tome. The tome itself has no intrinsic value, but there is considerable civic pride to be gained by its successful recovery. Atlantis and Megalopolis both want it, and the Institutes of Atlantis and the College of Knowledge in Megalopolis are both sending parties of adventurers to retrieve it. May the best party win, and all that.
Wswfirn has as much civic pride as the next man, and would, other things being equal, like Atlantis to win. But that is not the reason he has approached you.
Wswfirn's father and uncle run the family firm, the only publisher anywhere in the Fifty Worlds to use moveable type. He wants you to steal the ancient tome in order that his family firm can publish it. Once it has been typeset, he will present the tome to the Institutes. So it isn't really stealing, is it? Just borrowing.
Obviously, it will be much easier to steal the book in the wilderness than it will be once it has reached Atlantis. So that it what he wants you to do: wait for someone to find the book, steal it, and bring it to him. He will be waiting for you at some prearranged meeting point.
If you bring him the book, you will be well rewarded.
Wswfirn insists that you must not actually harm anyone. Threats and bluff are fine, but physical violence is to be ruled out. He is a businessman, not a gangster.

Kryptos invites you to his study, and chats for a long while before getting to the point. During the conversation, he occasionally switches to his alignment language (chaotic good). If you do not reply in the same language, forget it. He will be polite, and if you appear in need of money he will reward you for your time with a few silver pieces, but that is all.
If you reply in the same language, he will hire you. His story is this:

Atlantis and Megalopolis both want it, and the Institutes of Atlantis and the College of Knowledge in Megalopolis are both sending parties of adventurers to retrieve it. May the best party win, and all that.
The trouble is that the Megalopolis party is being organised by a magician, Quentin, whom Kryptos detests. Kryptos has as much civic pride as the next man, but a success for Quentin would be intolerable.
Kryptos wants you to organise a second, unofficial, party from Megalopolis. Your task will be to return with the book. You can either find it first or steal it from whoever else does. Kryptos is not interested in that side of things. As long as you return with the book and hand it over to him, you will be well rewarded.
Kryptos insists that you must not actually harm anyone. Threats and bluff are fine, but physical violence is to be ruled out. As you are chaotic good too, you naturally agree to this condition.
