Édouard Manet: Le Déjeuner sur l’Herbe(1863)

Le Déjeuner sur l’Herbe by Édouard Manet caused shock and outrage when it was publicly shown in 1863. Not only were the rough brushwork and undefined areas of colour distressing to the public; the naked woman, neither a Classical goddess nor an allegorical figure, was considered shocking. Manet claimed that the real subject of the painting was light, and it was that philosophy that gave birth to Impressionism.  [  >> Back  ]
