Antoine Watteau: Embarkation for the Island of Cythera (1717)

Antoine Watteau's Embarkation for the Island of Cythera (1717) is one of the finest examples of French Rococo painting. The company is about to embark for the mythical island of Cythera, a paradise that is, however, unreachable. In his delicate, ethereal style, influenced by Peter Paul Rubens and the Venetian school, Watteau portrays the scene as a fête galante, at which the French aristocracy socialized in the open air.
