Tempera: Fra Filippo Lippi c. 1455

Tempera, in which the pigment is mixed with egg yolk, gives an exceptionally smooth finish. It was widely used for frescoes in the early Renaissance and has undergone a minor revival in more recent times. Madonna and Child was painted by the Italian artist and monk Fra Filippo Lippi c. 1455.
