Irregular verbs

Many of the most common verbs in English are irregular. Try to memorize these verbs and their past simple forms when you see them for the first time.

come → came
make → made
think → thought

Read and listen to the text. Underline five more irregular past simple verbs and seven regular past simple verbs. Print it and send it to your teacher.


Wow! What a day! Last month, I won a competition. First prize was a trip in a helicopter! I had two tickets, so 1 invited my best friend, Steve, to come, too.


Before the flight, the pilot explained how the helicopter worked. We asked her lots of questions and we learned lots of interesting things.
On the trip, we travelled all over the city. We flew for about an hour, and we took hundreds of photos. We saw some amazing views!

I loved it! Now I want to be a helicopter pilot, too. It's the best job in the world!

Spelling of past simple regular verbs

When we make the past simple of a regular verb, we usually add -ed to the end of the verb.

open → opened

When a regular verb ends in -e, we add -d to the verb.

close → closed

When a regular verb ends in a consonant + -y, we usually change the y to an i and add -ed.

cry → cried
study → studied

When a regular verb ends in a vowel + -y, we usually just add -ed.

play → played
stay → stayed

We sometimes double the final consonant of past simple verbs.

drop → dropped
stop → stopped
hug → hugged
