Just as your doctor has many ways to diagnose what is ailing you, disease detectives have many ways to gauge the health of any entire community.
Cancer and heart disease top the list as the cause of death in many Bronx neighborhoods. But a more detailed look shows that each community has its own distinct health problems.
For example, Highbridge and Morrisania have the highest rate of people living with HIV/AIDS in both the brough and city, with their HIV-related death rate more than three times the city average.
Central Bronx has the highest rate of obesity, with 28% of adults tipping the scales at weights that can lead to a host of problems.
These vital signs, collected by the city Health Department's epidmiologists, can help the agency apply resources, such as screeing and treatment programs, where they are needed most.
The statistics used in this map were culled from the agency's latest health profiles for the borough divvied up into seven neighborhoods. |
