The piece is titled Stormy Coast-Maine on the stretcher and is dated 1968. Bisttram became famous for his Abstracts and Southwest scenes and this particular scene is interesting because it is similar to a piece painted circa 1922 at the beginning of his career in America. The two paintings almost seems as bookends to his work, one early in his career , one towards the end of his career, two interpretations of the same subject. After all the Transcendant Abstracts and Southwest Figurals of the 30's and 40's, he returned to a subject matter that seems elemental and powerfull: rock, ocean and dark sky. This piece is painted in deep, brooding colors interupted by the flash of a wave breaking over the rocks. Fresh from a collection in Montana.
