Very peaceful and serene! By an artist that is very rarely put for sale. Unfortunately the pictures don't live up to the beauty of the painting.
SIGNATURE: G. Achen. Georg Nikolaj Achen (1860-1912) is a well-listed artist. He graduated from Kunstakademiet (the Academy of Fine Arts) in Copenhagen in 1883. Thereafter he attended Kunstnernes Frie Studieskole (the Artists' Free Study School) under P.S Kroyer in the Winters of 1883-1885. Georg Achen was inspired by the French naturalists. In the 1880s he worked with landscape motifs, but after considerable praise from the critics in 1890 he became one of the most sought-after portrait painters in Denmark. You sense the influence from his artist friend Vilhelm Hammershoi in the portraits and interior paintings depicting a woman figure with her back turned. Achen was not very productive, probably because he suffered from a fragile mental constitution with several periods of crisis. Among the rewards he was given was the Mention Honorable, Paris 1889 and a golden medal in Munich. He was appointed to the Council of the Academy. He exhibited in Copenhagen, Munich, Chicago and at the World Exhibition in Paris. His works are represented in all the leading Museums in Denmark; Statens Museum for Kunst (the State Museum of Art), Den Hirschsprungske Samling (The Hirschsprung Collection) and Thorvaldsens Museum. The newer golden frame has only a few minor signs of age and is still very attractive. Ready to hang.
