The Lions of Messapia
presents a historical background in which the author sets his fictional
characters to play out the most significant moments of the history of the
Salentine peninsula: from the fierce disputes among the ruling dynasties to the
everlasting fight against the continuous pressure of the powerful Taras.
The Messapic civilization for many
years achieved a level of grandeur and sophistication similar to that of the
Etruscan. It too was eventually dominated and ruled by the Romans during Rome's
period of expansion and conquest. Many authors have speculated about the
Etruscan civilization, writing imaginative books and travelogues that have given
us deep insights into their life, art and manners. Up
until now, the writing on the Messapian civilization has been limited to erudite
and dull historical treatises. With
The Lions of Messapia
the author has bridged this gap and gets us closer to our ancestors so
that we can learn to love and respect our land and the culture that
characterizes it.
