Alexander Maryev

Alexander Alexandrovich Maryev was born in 1945 in Tallin, Estonia. He studied painting at Kostroma State University (Kostroma State Teachers Training University at that time) in the class of Y.Gorbunov.

Member of the Artists Union of Russia since 1983.

Many of the artist's works are now in museums and private collections both in Russia and abroad.

A. Maryev's series of etchings "Kostroma" is dedicated to the city's more than eight hundred years long history and its outstanding architectural masterpieces. The artist has been working on the subject for many years now. The composition of the etchings is precise and balanced, laconic and simply styling all serve one aim - preserving the image of the old Kostroma. One day the artist, who so masterfully works in monochrome etchings, decides to introduce colour. And again, the colours are thoroughly and masterfully chosen and add to the prevailing spirit of calm and piece. Recently the artist has been inspired by the idea of creating a portrait series of the Romanov dynasty. The fact that A. Maryev devoted two portraits to one person, Mikhail Romanov, shows that the author sincerely interested and proud of the role Kostroma played in the Russian history. Apart from his busy artistic activity, A. Maryev still works as tutor at Kostroma State University where he once studied painting.
