BATTERY PARK

Located at the southern tip of Manhattan, Battery Park comprises an open
area of 21 acres, with Castle Clinton as its historical landmark.
The castle was originally called "West Battery", serving to guard the harbor
during British rule, and was officially renamed in 1812. In later years
it became "Castle Garden" and converted into a place for entertainment.
In 1855 it became the country´s immigration station. With the port of entry
transferred to Ellis Island in 1890, it was later remodeled to house the
Aquarium of the New York Zoological Society, which was demolished in 1942.
During the building of the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel under Battery Park,
part of the old fort was demolished as well, which led to a nationwide protest.
Finally it was ceded to the Federal Government and restored.

In nearby BOWLING GREEN PARK history took place, when in 1776 citizens
de-throwened the statue of British King George III. and declared Independence...

The U.S. CUSTOMS HOUSE, a nice "beaux-arts-style" -building by Cass Gilbert (1907),
with rotunda and sculpture-groups of the four continents, once controlled the customs,
which were derived from imported goods, shipped into the New York Harbor.
Today it houses the National Museum of the American Indian.

WORLD FINANCIAL CENTER & BATTERY PARK CITY

When the construction of the World Trade Center began in 1966, billions
and billions of cubic feet of earth were shipped into the adjoining Hudson River
creating new land for what would later become BATTERY PARK CITY:
Home and working place for about 35,ooo people --- a revolutionary architural
concept with 4 skyscrapers, grand plaza, river-promenade, a winter-garden
with palms-trees, lots of lawn and park-spaces and many art-sculptures,
plus the appartment-buildings for the working staff.
(designed by city-planners A. Cooper and S. Eckstut in 1979)

Cesar Pelli, architect of the WORLD FINANCIAL CENTER, had invisioned
a city of heavenly structures, buildings uniting with the sky... and so it happened:
by using darker granite for the lower levels and increasingly lighter material
for the upper floors, the towers seem to dissolve into the air... each of the them
crowned by a different top (globe, "mastaba", Mexican and Egyptian pyramid).
The towers are between 34 and 51 floors high and built in glass and granite.

While the Promenade converts into a "Venice-Lido" with lots of action during the
summer-months, Winter-Garden is a good place for concerts, expos, dining,
shopping and a shelter against the cold winter-winds...
The huge glass-lobby is double the size of the Grand Central Terminal Lobby.
The complex was finished in 1986 and had to be repaired due to the
terrorist attack of 9-11-2001 (the World Trade Center was nearby)
