Lyrics: Elton John - Friends Never Say Goodbye

"There isn't much I haven't shared
With you along the road
And through it all there'd always be
Tomorrow's episode"

Kian looked out over the big city. A light rain was falling, and people down on the street below were trying to find cover. He could just about make out the two figures, huddled together, that were coming back from their shopping trip.

He sighed as he watched the pair. They were walking so close now… he leaned over the balcony railing a bit to get a better view, scolding himself for doing so. He didn’t even know why he suddenly felt sudden pang of jealousy.

"Suddenly that isn't true
There's another avenue
Beckoning the great divide
Ask no questions, take no side"

Nicky. Kian felt the now familiar jealousy rush through his blood. It had taken him years to build up what he had with Shane, and then Nicky had bounced in to their lives and all of a sudden he seemed to be Shane’s favourite. They went shopping. They had their long chats. Heck, they even went on 'Shnicky Nights' together!

"Who's to say who's right or wrong
Whose course is braver run
Still we are, have always been
Will ever be as one"

"I’m back!!!" Shane’s voice made him jump. He hadn’t realised that he had been wrapped up in his own. "Where are you?!"

"On the balcony!" Kian swallowed and tried not to blush. He always wondered if Shane would realise what he was doing.

Shane came out on the balcony. "Ah, there you are. I missed you." He went over and put his arms around Kian.

"I missed you too…" Kian mumbled; eyes focused on a point in the distance that was only visible to him.

"So, what’s planned for tonight?" Shane finally said.

"Tonight?" Kian echoed.

"Yeah, tonight."

Kian finally looked at Shane. "Nothing, I thought…"

"You thought what?"

"Nothing."

"Tell me."

Kian sighed. "I thought you would be going out with Nicky tonight."

"What is done has been done for the best
Though the mist in my eyes might suggest
Just a little confusion about what I'll lose
But if I started over I know I would choose"

Shane let go of Kian and looked at him. "Oh."

"Yeah, oh." Kian said, a bit more harshly than he had intended.

"Well, Kian, Nicky is going out with Mark and Bry tonight. I thought you might want to spend some time just the two of us?"

Kian felt like screaming. Shane knew exactly what Nicky was doing tonight, and since those plans didn’t suit Shane he’d come to Kian. Was he just second best?

"Yeah, sure." Kian said, trying to sound like he could have done something more important but took pity on his friend.

Shane smiled. "Great. I know the perfect place."

"The same joy the same sadness each step of the way
That fought me and taught me that friends never say
Never say goodbye"

"Oh, I’m so full." Kian managed the last bit of ice cream then looked at Shane across the table. Shane had a content smile on his face.

"Me too. So, what’s next?" He asked as the waiter arrived with their bill.

"Do you want to split that?" Kian reached for the bill but Shane snatched it before Kian had a chance to see how much the meal had been.

"It’s on me, Ki. So, what to you want to do next?" He handed the waiter his credit card as his eyes focused on Kian.

Kian shrugged. "Options?"

"Club? Pub? Back to the hotel?"

Kian bit his lip. "I’m tired, how about just go back to the hotel and chill out?"

Shane accepted the credit card back from the waiter. "Alright, the hotel it is."

"Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye"

"So, can I come in?" Shane asked as they stood outside Kian’s hotel room.

"Sure." Kian opened the door to let them in, wondering if Shane was really just spending time with him because Nicky had made other plans.

Shane sat on the bed, then patted the space next to him. Kian sat down, reluctantly.

Kian looked at Shane, he was obviously in a mood for a chat. "Is it serious?"

Shane looked at Kian, then shrugged. "It’s nothing." He still hadn’t figured out how to break the news.

"No, of course. You had planned to tell Nicky, right? You were hoping to be sitting on his bed tonight." The words escaped Kian’s lips before he even had the time to think them over.

"Suddenly that isn't true
There's another avenue
Beckoning, the great divide"

Shane sighed. "Oh, Kian. Don’t say that."

"You don’t like to hear the truth?" Kian didn’t mean to be like that, he just felt like he was loosing control over his emotions.

"It’s not the truth, Ki. I had a really great night tonight. I know I haven’t spent much time with you lately and I’m really, truly, sorry but… You see Kian, I love you, in more ways than one and much deeper than friendship and… I was just trying to… deal with it, if you see what I mean?" There, it was out.

"I would choose
The same joy the same sadness each step of the way
That fought me and taught me that friends never say
Never say goodbye"

Kian looked at Shane for a hint of mischief, something that told him that Shane was pulling his leg. Nothing.

"Oh, God, Shane… you, you…. Say that again?"

"What? The part about loving?"

Kian nodded, breathlessly.

"I love you, Kian." Shane tried to pour all his emotions into those three little words.

Kian blinked away the tears, suddenly his own feeling were breaking out from the boundaries that held them. "I love you too."

"What?" Shane was puzzled.

"Kiss me."

Shane smiled as he leaned forward and their lips met. Nicky had told him Kian would never say no. He had been right… so right.

"Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye
Never say goodbye"
