"Well I wake up every morning and the first thing that I say
Is that I hope that I can make it through another lonely day
I'm afraid I might explode if I keep going on this way"

Kian yawned and stretched. Even pretending he had had a good nights sleep would be a pain. He looked across the room, then remembered that they had been given separate rooms and Shane wouldn’t be lying there looking angelic in his own bed.

"Damn,"’ he muttered, his bad temper triggered by the lack of sleep. He got off the bed and went into the bathroom to freshen up.

He thought back over the dilemma. He had been outed by some tabloid a month back. The world knew he was gay… but no one knew about the crush on Shane.

Shane, who had been acting strange and distant since the day he’d come out. Shane, who seemed to be homophobic. He sighed as he threw on a cap and headed down for breakfast.

"People always notice me wherever I go
They think I'm lucky but they don't really know
Beauty and brains are all that I've got
I've got a cold cold bed and a broken heart, a broken heart"

"And the winner is… Shane Filan everybody!" Shane stepped out on stage, his ears almost going at the noise from the crowd, and took the award.

"Thank you. Thanx to everyone who voted for me. To Smash Hits, and to all our fans. Love you guys!" He waved and went off stage.

It was the 3rd year in a row that he won the 'Smash Hits Best Looking Male' award. He looked at it, pointless really, looked pretty much the same as the past two years. Why couldn’t Kian see whatever those people saw in him?

"Everybody loves me, everyone but you
But nobody undoes me like the thought of you can do
They search my eyes but I don't know why
'Cos all I ever do is cry
Everybody loves me but you"

Shane lay down on his bed; tears were already filling his eyes. He hated his life right then. Everywhere he went he got awards. He got comments on how lucky he was being in Westlife. He had to pretend he was happy, when his heart was being torn apart.

Why did all those people love him, but the person he really cared about didn’t? He’d give up all this for Kian’s love. He would, and that wasn’t a joke. Isn’t it true that love conquers everything?

"Girls wanna be me so they can pick and choose
They figure out of ten men there's no way that they can lose
Men would walk the plank for me and set themselves on fire
What do they see in me that isn't sad and tired, tired"

Kian was lying on his back in his bed. The time since he came out had been so hard. Not only criticism. There’d now be young men practically throwing themselves at him. They weren’t exactly shy either most of the time, having replaced the girls who’d formerly done stuff like that. And, some girls were jealous of him too.

They didn’t know though, didn’t know that he was being torn apart by his own feelings.

"I could fill my life with people who wanna be with me
Do like when they say there's other fish in the sea
There's a world out there and a million things to do
But what do I care if it doesn't include you, you"

Kian thought back over his friend’s words. ‘"If you don’t want to risk telling him, then I think you should move on. There’s plenty more fish in the sea!" The past week he’d been trying just that. Forget Shane. But no, it didn’t work.

He then realised he had nothing to loose. Shane was already ignoring him. Shane would probably be disgusted and angry, and Kian thought that maybe that would help his own mind see reality. He got off the bed and walked over to Shane’s room.

"Everybody loves me, everyone but you
But nobody undoes me like the thought of you can do
They search my eyes but I don't know why
'Cos all they ever do is cry
Everybody loves me"

When Shane opened the door it was obvious he’d been crying. "Hey, what’s wrong?" Kian asked softly, "Can I come in?" Shane nodded and opened the door wider to let Kian in.

Kian gave him a hug and then held him for a while. Both parties thought that this felt right, but neither knew how to say it. They just stood like that.

"Kian?" Shane said suddenly.

"Mmm?" Kian looked at Shane, their gazes locked for a moment.

"I… I" Shane started, then took a deep breath and tried again. "I think I’m falling in love with you," he said quickly and closed his eyes shut; he was scared he’d lose a great friendship.

Kian was a bit shocked, but then he reached out and touched Shane’s cheek. "Shane, open your eyes…"

Shane slowly opened them and looked at Kian. Kian looked deeply into them. "You’ve got beautiful eyes…. You are beautiful…" he stopped and smiled, "and I’ve loved you for ages."

Shane looked at him. "Really?" he said hopefully.

"Yeah you deutz!" Shane smiled broadly and Kian took his chance. Their lips met, and now both their lives were complete…

"A cold cold bed and a broken heart
A cold cold bed and a broken heart
An empty house and a broken car
A cold cold bed and a broken heart"
