Observations of this cluster component star colours was conducted by the ASNSW's "Double Star Section" in the early-1980's. Here some thirty-four observers went out and observed to examined ten selected stars in the Jewel Box.

Table 2 shows the colours calculated using the Hagen Colour Index (HCI), which is a standard colour scale for double stars, The scale follows:
-3 | Pure Blue |
-2 | Pale Blue (Bluish) |
-1 | Blue / White |
0 | Pure White |
1 | Yellowish/white |
2 | Pale Yellow (Yellowish) |
3 | Pure Yellow |
4 | Orange /Yellow |
5 | Yellow / Orange |
6 | Pure Orange |
7 | Reddish / Orange |
8 | Orangery / Red |
9 | Red / Orangery |
10 | Pure Red |
