The Morning After
8.28.04
There is no happiness here
Those memories of this and that linger
On metal-dyed chains
Choking those who open their mouths
To speak of the days
Before the sun shone the good out of his eyes
There is no forgiveness here
Those feelings of love and hate and tomorrow that fade
On flower petals dyed in blood
Over-doused on their ecstasy
When you open your eyes to smile
But the sun shone the life out of her eyes
For now...
And it’s quiet without your laughter
And it’s silent, now, the morning after
The morning after.
There is no living here
Those shattered pieces of glass that lie
On the floor, dyed with you tears
Falling downward, spinning out of control
But the sun shone the smiles out of your eyes
There is no dreaming here
Those thoughts of you and me that crack
On frozen ice, dyed by the unlived life
Wondering why we were meant to be broken
Before the sun shone the love from my eyes
For now...
And it’s quiet without your laughter
And it’s silent, now, the morning after
The morning after.
And we will never figure out
What we were meant to be
We will never fly away
We’ll never be free
You do not love me
And I could not-
Die anymore than I already have
And it’s quiet without your laughter
And it’s silent, now, the morning after...
After you
After me
After words that we don’t mean
After life
After lies
After the final compromise
I pull the sheet up
Over my face
I cannot face another day
I don’t get up to turn the lights out
I’ll sleep this way
My mask is slipping
My face is falling away
And it’s quiet without your laughter
And it’s silent, now, the morning after...
And it’s quiet without your laughter
And it’s silent, now, the morning after
The morning after.
