Haunted Portrait

Submitted by James Boyd

Back in July of this year (98) I and a friend of mine visited a co-worker at his residence in the town of Honaker Virginia. The house had belonged to his parents and had come to him after the death of his mother. The home is a large Victorian style house located on what is known a the Fairmont section of Honaker. Our original intention was to pick up some lumber and leave. However he insisted on showing us around the "Home Place" as he called it. WE were shown, with various tales of related history, each room of the house and its collection of beautiful antique furniture.

As we entered a room on the upper floor I noticed an old picture of a young woman in Victorian dress hanging on the wall. Interested in the frame work I walked over and ran my hand over the frame. At that moment I felt a chill run over my body and it felt like every hair on my body stood on end. As I turned away from the picture my friends wife was just saying "There is an interesting tale about that picture." My response was "There had to be, just look at my arms" The hair on my arms was standing on end. We were standing in the middle of the room and my friend had just started to step between me and his wife when the light in the room came on! No one near the switch, no sound of a switch just suddenly there was light. My first thought which I expressed verbally was "Who turned on the light?" My friends response was "Oh stuff like that happens in this house all the time" The guy who came with me to get the lumber had an injured knee and was walking with a brace. His response was "Wait on me, you know I can't Run!" After leaving the room the lady of the house explained that the woman in the picture had been seen on different occasions walking through the house. On one occasion "she" got into bed with a young woman visiting with his mother.
