Then the Morning Comes (Part One)
Liz was leaning up against her locker, yawning as she switched
her books in and out for her first class. Maria was talking
non-stop, of course, about the long hours they had worked at the
cafe last night. Liz turned her bleary eyes to her in amazement.
"How can you still talk this much? I'm too exhausted to
think that fast, much less talk that fast."
Maria giggled. "It's a gift. Although, actually, I've heard
more than one person say that it's a curse. Just take a nap
during..."
Suddenly, Maria stopped talking and slapped Liz on the shoulder.
"Ow! What is it?"
Maria pointed speechlessly down the hall.
Liz looked at her for a second, wondering what could shut Maria
up that quick. But when she saw Max and Isabel headed her way,
she had the same reaction.
"Oh....my...." she managed.
Max was wearing black cowboy boots...and tight black leather
pants that showed off his muscles as he walked....and a deep
purple silk shirt, unbuttoned halfway down his tanned, toned
chest. He looked completely...hot.
Isabel was walking two feet in front of him, obviously
embarrassed. She saw Liz and Maria and headed in their direction
in relief.
Behind her, Max had other ideas. A tall, blonde senior
cheerleader was standing by the lockers, obviously checking him
out. As he smiled and headed in her direction, she fluttered her
eyelashes coyly at him.
Liz was stunned. Isabel reached them with an apologetic look.
"He has been acting weird all morning."
Maria looked at Max, who had put one hand on the lockers behind
the blonde and was leaning in amazingly close, and then back at
Isabel.
"What the hell did you feed that boy for breakfast, an
oyster cocktail with a Viagra chaser? How could he be interested
in Flora Sanders?"
Isabel sighed. "I tried to get him to change clothes or at
least button up that stupid shirt, but he wouldn't listen."
Liz *had* to get closer to hear what Max was saying. He was
drawing a lot of attention to himself, surely he knew that.
As she stood just feet away, Max leaned in and kissed Flora on
the neck. She blushed and tried to look disinterested.
She's failing miserably, thought Liz. As if to prove
Liz's point, Flora reached up and touched Max's chest, making
sure to let her hand roam a little.
That was all the encouragement Max needed. He dropped his books
and pulled her to him, oblivious to everyone else in the hallway.
His hand traced her jaw line and he pushed her hair behind her
ear.
Liz was in total shock. That's how he...how we...that jerk,
she thought angrily. She wanted to tear her eyes away, but she
just couldn't.
But Flora finally felt embarrassed by the public display and
pushed him away. Max stared at her a moment in confusion, then
leaned in to whisper in her ear.
Flora listened and then shook her flushed face. She switched her
backpack around to the other shoulder and walked down the hall,
trying to ignore the catcalls.
Max heard the clapping and cheers from the guys around, but just
ignored them and picked up his books. He took the opportunity to
check out the other girls walking around him, most of whom were
smiling at him.
Then the bell rang and the students scattered, Max slowly weaving
his way among them. Except three, who still could not believe
what they had seen.
Liz was frozen in place, trying to reconcile Max's behavior with
the shy, careful guy she knew.
Isabel was totally embarrassed and finally threw her hands in the
air. "That is NOT my brother," she mumbled as she
walked to class.
Maria walked over to Liz and slipped her arm through hers.
"Don't worry, I'm sure there's an explanation. We'd better
go to class."
Liz turned to Maria. "He was strutting down the hall just
now, wasn't he? Tell me the truth."
Maria avoided Liz's eyes. "No, it was just a kind of
rhythmic walking thing. Definitely not a strut."
Liz sighed. "You're lying. I can always tell when you're
lying. And I thought Max's 'step back' crap was hard to take.
This is definitely worse."
Maria laid her head on Liz's shoulder as they headed to class.
After second period, Maria was determined to confront Max,
since Liz was entirely incapable of it. And Alex was laughing too
hard to do it.
She rolled her eyes at the 'guyness' Alex displayed sometimes.
Like it isn't totally scary to see Max try to be a stud. Ewww,
she shivered at the thought. It's just not *him*.
So when she finally caught up to him in the hallway between
classes, she pulled him away from Lisa Genowski, who was turning
all kind of shades of red as he caressed her hair, and
practically dragged him into the eraser room.
She slammed the door behind them and threw her books on the
floor.
"You have some explaining to do, Max Evans. I just cannot
believe you would do this to Liz."
She was completely unready for his response.
He set his books down on a nearby shelf and turned to look at
her...slowly...up and down. "Has anyone told you that you
look incredible today?"
For the second time that day, Maria was speechless.
Max walked towards her slowly, his eyes caressing her face and
moving back down to her legs.
"Incredible...and very sexy."
She shook her head, and backed up as far as she could. The door
halted her escape.
All she could do is watch as Max came closer. The intensity of
his gaze....the way he blinked his eyes so slowly....the curve of
his lips...and the heat coming off of him was mesmerizing.
This is Max, Maria thought desperately. Liz's Max?
But now he was putting both of his hands against the door and
leaning in. She could feel his breath as she tried to avoid eye
contact. But gazing down only left her staring at his amazingly
cut chest muscles. She giggled. What was it that she was supposed
to tell him?
"Are you the one," Max whispered in her ear.
Maria looked up at him in confusion.
Max's eyes moved down to her lips and Maria found herself not
minding at all. She managed to keep her head still as his lips
found hers, but that didn't last long. His lips were so gentle,
but the feeling behind them....was intoxicating.
She put her hands up to push him away, but the feel of his
muscles underneath that silk turned her push into a caress.
Max pulled away slowly and smiled down at her. "You are the
one," he said huskily.
Something about that phrase brought Maria back to herself.
"Okay," she said as she ducked out from under Maxıs
arms. "That's not true. I'm so *not* the one."
She was trying to catch her breath and get her head back on
straight. Max was still looking at her like she was his favorite
flavor of ice cream....and she didn't really mind it.
"See, I can see now why Liz...I mean, the whole kissing
thing is very...very hot. But-no. I am not the one, so I had
better leave. Right now."
Max gazed at her intently. "Are you sure? You felt pretty
right to me."
"No," she shook her head. "Definitely not right.
I'm the wrong one. I talk too much. I...hate biology. I...have to
go. Bye, Max."
She managed to grab her books and be out the door before Max
could touch her again. After the door shut behind her, she
berated herself. "That did NOT work. Liz is going to kill
me...."
Max spent all of third period checking out the girls in the
class, which completely annoyed Isabel.
But what really pissed her off was the responses from the girls
in the class. They were flirting like crazy!
She had to admit that Max *would* look hot, *if* he weren't her
brother. Ewww! But still...
Before class ended, Max finally settled on one, a redhead with
long legs, a short skirt and a killer smile. After the bell rang,
he moved over to her desk. "Hi," he said, huskily.
"Well, well, if it isn't Max Evans." She gathered her
books and stepped in front of him.
"Tell me your name..." he said, intrigued by her smile.
"Cassie...Cassie Burkhalter. You've only known me for three
years, Max," she shook her head at him and started to walk
away.
Max watched her sashaying hips, completely oblivious to the hint
of anger in her voice. He caught up to her easily.
"Have you ever been to the eraser room before?" he
asked, sliding his arm around her waist.
She stared at him and stopped walking. Then a grin slid across
her face.
Isabel stood in the doorway, completely dumbfounded as they
walked away together.
"He-he....She....that tramp! He-" Isabel gritted her
teeth and thought of a few choice words Mr. Max Evans was going
to hear on the way home today. After all his talk about being
careful and urges and snot like that, he just goes off and
seduces any girl who'll give him the time of day.
Isabel stomped off to her next class with one thought
reverberating in her mind, "This sucks!"
Liz was tapping her pencil on the countertop. She couldn't
help but glance at Max again. Not only was his shirt unbuttoned
all the way and completely untucked, but he had lipstick smeared
on his neck and chest.
*And* he was completely oblivious to her anger, seemingly lost in
his own thoughts.
Liz couldn't figure him out. His behavior was outrageous, but he
didn't act uncomfortable with it in the least.
As the teacher handed out their lab assignment for the day, Liz
tried to break into Max's reverie. "Hello? Anybody
home?"
Max started, and then stared at Liz like he'd never seen her
before.
Liz couldn't stand it. She pulled a tissue out of their station's
box and handed it to him. "You have lipstick all over you.
Wipe it off," she grumbled.
He took the tissue and absentmindedly swiped at his neck, never
taking his eyes off of her. Liz sighed in frustration and stood
beside the microscope.
"If you're interested in our project at all, we're supposed
to be comparing these two slides. Do you want to make the first
observations or should I?"
Max stood up and walked over to stand directly behind her.
Liz immediately felt her guard go up.
Max leaned in, "Are you the one?"
His husky whisper unnerved her. Liz turned her head to look at
him and he reached up to caress her cheek. His other hand stole
around her waist, pulling her back against him.
Liz immediately felt flushed and annoyed with herself. They were
in Biology class, for god's sake!!
She looked back up at him just as his glance slid to her lips and
she knew he was going to kiss her...right in front of everyone.
She pulled away desperately and walked up to Mrs. Hardy.
"I'm not feeling well. May I go to the nurse's office?"
Mrs. Hardy looked her over. "You do look flushed, dear. Go
ahead. Come back if you get to feeling better."
As Liz grabbed her books, she avoided looking Max in the eyes,
but she could feel his gaze as she left the room.
Liz couldn't even form the most basic theory in regards to
Max's behavior. It just wasn't Max. That's the only thing she
knew. And after tossing aside all of the 'body snatcher' plots
she had seen in old movies, there was simply nothing left to work
with. Except Max, an incredible libido and an even more
incredible outfit.
She blushed just thinking about those tight pants that revealed
just about everything...
Walking to the nurse's office, she happened to glance outside the
front window for a moment. What she saw didn't make sense, so she
stopped and looked again.
It was....Michael, or was it? He was standing on the steps
outside, leaning against one of the pillars, his face attached to
Pamela Smith's!
Mouth agape, Liz swung open the door and strode over to the
couple.
They completely ignored her. Michael had his hands all over
Pamela, even up under her shirt. On the front steps of the
school!
Liz had had enough. She grabbed Pamela by her hair and yanked her
away from Michael.
"Ow!!!!" Pamela slapped Liz's hand.
"Excuse me, what are you two doing?" Liz practically
yelled.
Michael just smiled at her dreamily. "She's the one,"
he said simply.
Liz looked at him with disdain. "Pamela? Uh-huh. I don't
think so. Go back to class, Pam."
Pamela looked a trifle embarrassed as she wiped her mouth and
tried to quietly slip away.
Liz turned her gaze back to Michael. She noticed that he had
slicked his hair back, carefully parted it and was wearing a
skin-tight white t-shirt with the tightest jeans Liz had ever
seen on a guy. And was that an earring in his ear?
And he was staring at her as if he'd never seen her before.
"And who are you?" he asked her, pushing away from the
pillar and walking over to her.
Liz was nonplused, even as she took in the way his shirt was
tight in all the right places...
"Michael, what is going on with you and Max? It's me-Liz.
And I cannot believe you were out here..."
Michael was getting too close for comfort and Liz took several
steps back...right into a pillar. She began to understand how
Pamela had been caught in that situation.
Michael leaned in and whispered, "Are you the one?"
"The one what?" she said a little too breathlessly. Had
she ever been this close to Michael before?
Michael just smiled and breathed his minty breath on her.
Breath mints and an earring? Liz just had time to think before
Michael kissed her. Not a gentle, tender kiss like she expected,
but a passionate, hungry kiss that left her breathless. Her arms
went behind her to the pillar for support.
She couldn't touch him...she wouldn't. This was Maria's
Michael...
But as for stopping this kiss...the tingles running all the way
to her toes made it impossible. And-oh god-there went his hands.
Michael slid one hand gently under her sweater, caressing her
bare stomach until Liz felt dizzy from the heat. He caressed the
back of her neck with the other, running it up into her hair.
As soon as he stopped to take a breath, she looked down (safer
that way) and said the only thing that she could manage to think
of at the time.
"Uh...I'm not the one, Michael, whatever that means."
She shook her head to clear it a little, then chanced a look at
him.
Michael was staring down at her, the passion of the moment still
in his eyes. "I think you are. You seem familiar...and very
sexy."
Liz managed to move his hand off of her stomach and slide out
from the pillar. "No. Iım somebody else's 'one.' I'm
sorry...bye."
She took another look at him, still staring at her strangely and
forced her weak legs to take her inside.
Once inside, she leaned against the wall and smoothed her hands
over her flushed cheeks. Maria was going to kill her when she
found out what happened! And when she saw Michael like...that!
What was going on with these guys?
Liz wandered aimlessly for a while, turning the puzzle over
and over in her head.
She eventually found herself in a stall in the girls' bathroom,
definitely one of the best places to be invisible and think.
After all of her thinking, she kept coming back to one thing:
Max and Michael were acting like a totally different people....
mindless combinations of hormones...acting against all their
previous caution and driven to...to...
The door opened and two voices filled the room.
"Max Evans? Are you serious?" the first voice asked
incredulously.
"I am *so* serious, Jenn. He was all over me. And, oh my
god, you should feel his butt in those leather pants. Oh my God.
I swear, if it hadn't been for the fact that we were in the
middle of gym class, I think he would have hung me out to dry by
now."
The bell rang.
"The middle of gym class?" Jenn asked incredulously.
"Uh-huh. Behind the bleachers."
Another girl entered and stopped to chat. "Hi, Jenn."
"Hi, Steph. Oh, Stacey, you are so lucky. I can't even get
Max to look at me. I thought he was totally stuck on Liz Parker.
What did you do get him away from her?"
"Honey, if I knew that, I wouldn't tell you, anyway. He
looks so hot today, he could've probably melted those bleachers
if he'd gotten too close."
"I know that's the truth, girl," Steph interrupted.
"But from what I've heard, it's not just you he's been
groping today."
"Are you kidding? Who else?"
Liz couldn't stand it anymore. She flushed the toilet, and
stepped out into view, effectively stopping the conversation.
Her determined glare had the bathroom cleared out in ten seconds.
Liz took a moment to calm herself before heading out to her sixth
period class.
Maria was just heading into another restroom, certain that her
mascara had smudged again. She kept seeing this black spot on her
nose and it was driving her crazy.
When she opened the door and saw a couple making out on the
counter, she stammered an "excuse me..." and turned to
exit. Then her mind re-processed the image and she did an
about-face.
Maria walked up behind the girl who was giving every indication
of being totally turned on. And Maria could see why. The guy with
his hands up this cream puff's blouse was... Michael Guerin!!
Okay, the hair, the earring (?) and the skin-tight, revealing
shirt had thrown her off at first, but it was definitely Michael.
Her Michael...sort of.
And then, for the second time in less than an hour, Michael had a
girl pulled away from him.
As he felt the abrupt end of his kiss, he opened his eyes and
blinked slowly.
The cream puff snuck away, a little embarrassed by the turn-on
she'd experienced with...Michael Guerin, of all people!!???
Michael's eyes finally focused enough to see Maria standing in
front of him, hands on her hips and a glare on her face cold
enough to freeze anybody in the heat of the moment.
"What the hell do you think you're doing?"
He just licked his lips and gave her one of the most intense
looks she'd ever seen.
She couldn't believe it. He wasn't even going to attempt to
explain himself. She grunted in frustration.
"Michael!" She didn't know what else to do but wait for
an explanation.
He slid off the countertop and began to walk towards her.
She blinked as saw his eyes run up and down her body.
She held out her hand to ward him off. "Oh no, you don't.
Max has already tried this and-"
Michael stopped dead in his tracks. He looked confused. "Are
you his one?"
Maria was flabbergasted. "No! Me and Max? No
way...but-"
She never got out another word. Michael took two long strides and
enveloped her in his arms. He ran his fingers through her hair,
smelling it hungrily. He smiled down at her at he ran his fingers
over her face.
"Are you the one?" he asked simply. Then, without
waiting for an answer, he lowered his mouth onto her quivering
lips and immediately thrust his tongue deep into her mouth.
Maria's knees went weak and she couldn't help but respond. Her
arms slid around his waist and she grasped weakly at the muscles
in his back.
Finally Michael stopped to take a breath and Maria stared up at
him, trying to form enough thoughts to make a sentence of some
sort.
Michael caressed her cheek. "You are the one," he
whispered.
At those words, Maria shook her head and backed out of his
embrace.
"Okay, buster. I am NOT doing this again. The make out, get
my heart torn out and stomped on thing again. You can forget it.
There is something weird going on and I'll be keel-hauled if I'm
going to just sit here and be some kind of puppet that you can
pick up and get off on every now and then."
She glared at him for a minute as she thought. Then she grabbed
his hand. "You're coming with me."
Michael's face was vaguely disturbed by her response, but all he
said as she led him out the door was, "Keel-hauled? What's
keel-hauled?"
As Liz was thoughtfully making her way to class, she heard a
familiar voice call her name. She stopped and winced. Just what
she needed.
But she knew it was foolish to try to evade him. He always
managed to catch her somehow. So she turned to face the music.
Kyle had obviously been waiting for this opportunity all day, a
grin of absolute hilarity on his face. "So, Liz, have you
seen Max Evans today?"
Liz rolled her eyes. "Yeah, why do you ask? Do his leather
pants turn you on, too?"
Kyle stopped in surprise, then poked his lips out in a look of
mock pity.
"You're tense, Liz. Having a difficult time controlling your
Max? I can understand that. Hell, I'm having a hard time just
trying to keep up with who he's groping now," Kyle closed in
and put his arm around her shoulders. "Where's a good
sportscaster when you need one, huh?"
Liz was in no mood for his barbs. "Kyle, leave me
alone," Liz pushed his arm away, but he blocked her from
continuing down the hallway.
"What is this, anyway, payback from Max for you breaking up
with him? I have to admit it's working better than anything I've
tried. I wish I had thought of it first. Although I donıt know
if I would've had the balls to pull it off as well as he
has."
Liz gave him a piercing look. "I know you wouldn't have.
Goodbye, Kyle."
At least that shut him up. What had she ever seen in him? And
what an awful day!
As Liz neared her classroom, she suddenly felt eyes watching her.
She sped up, but couldn't shake the feeling. Finally, she
casually turned her head to the side and scoped out the hallway.
It was Max, following her with an unmistakable grin on his face.
At least someone had finally convinced him to tuck his shirt back
in and button it halfway up.
I'll have to thank Isabel. She's the only one who would've
done that.
Then Liz noticed three very interested girls trying to catch up
to Max, just dying for a piece of the action.
Liz decided to nip this thing in the bud. She strode towards Max
and grabbed his hand.
"You must be thinking what I'm thinking," he intoned as
he rubbed her palm with his thumb.
Liz glared at him. "I seriously doubt that."
She pulled him into the eraser room and tried to ignore the
giggles and catcalls she heard outside.
Then, before turning around, she stopped to gather her thoughts
and take a deep breath. Big mistake.
Max was standing behind her in an instant, his body firm and hot
against hers. She lost every single thought she had just gathered
as his hands slid around her waist. Instead of a coherent
sentence, only a low sigh made it out of her mouth.
She had completely forgotten how he affected her...especially
when he was like....this. Whatever 'this' is...
As he leaned to bury his face in her hair, she could barely hear
his whisper. "Are you the one?"
That phrase reminded Liz of why she was there. Somehow she
managed to turn herself in his arms and pull away.
Max looked surprised, but was still smiling that
sexy...intriguing 'come hither' smile. Liz almost forgot her
question...again.
Max started to move towards her.
Liz lifted up her hand to stop him. "Wait. Just tell me one
thing."
Max didn't stop. "What's that?"
"What do you mean, am I 'the one'?"
He stopped just in front of her and paused to think. It was
obvious that he hadn't even considered the question until now.
"'The one' means....my mate...for life. Yeah..." He
seemed satisfied with his answer and stepped closer to Liz,
reaching out and caressing her face. "I think it's
you."
Liz's mind was working so fast she could barely control it.
She took his hand away from her face and looked deeply into his
eyes. She was beginning to understand, but there was one missing
piece that she just couldn't figure out.
"For life.... what's the point of getting a lifemate
now?" she asked hesitantly. "You're only sixteen."
Max looked at her in surprise, then leaned in close. Liz thought
he was going to try to evade the question. Instead, he brushed
the hair away from her neck and kissed her neck a few times
before answering.
"Procreation," he whispered huskily.
"What?" Liz managed to choke out.
"Making a baby, Liz. You know what the word means. It's
time..." he reached out his other hand and pulled her closer
and continued to kiss her neck, moving down onto her chest.
She knew she should have worn a turtleneck today.
Lizıs heart was so torn. Had she ever dreamed of anything more
than being his forever? But, Max wouldn't be saying this if he
was in his right mind....
She shook her head. She knew what she *had* to do.
"Max," she whispered and waited for him to look at her.
"Max...I am the one, but-"
He bowed his head and pulled her close in an embrace. "Thank
you," he choked out.
Liz closed her eyes briefly as her arms went around him. She'd
had no idea this meant so much to him. God, she hated to do this
to him. "We need to get you out of here, okay?"
Max mumbled, "Sure."
Liz was sure she saw tears in his eyes as she grabbed his hand
and pulled him toward the door. The hallways were almost empty as
the bell rang.
Liz managed to remember Alex's schedule and stood outside his
math class trying to get his attention. Finally, he looked up and
interpreted her gestures well enough to ask for a bathroom pass.
When he got out in the hall and saw Max, his eyes lost their
worried expression. "I hear you've had a busy day. So, what
is your harem currently running? Think I could borrow a
few?" he asked with a grin.
Max just smiled at Liz. Liz glared at Alex.
"We need your help, and Isabel's. Can you find her and meet
us at the jeep in the parking lot? I've got to find Maria...and
Michael if he's still here."
Alex frowned. "Sure. Is Isabel all right?"
"Yeah, I'll explain when you get outside."
As they reached Max's jeep, Liz was relieved to see Maria and
Michael already there.
"Maria! I looked everywhere for you. I'm so glad you found
Michael," Liz couldn't help but smile at the way Maria
pulled away from Michael quickly as they walked up.
"Yeah...and he's...like....completely freaking me out. He
and Mr. Loverboy there," she indicated Max walking towards
her. "I..uh...hear Max had some major eraser room time
today."
Liz shook her head. "Well, I finally think I know what's
going on. Alex and Isabel should be here soon-"
"There they are," Maria interrupted.
Alex and Isabel walked up, looking slightly worried. "What's
up, guys?" Isabel got right to the point. "Michael? Oh
my god...him, too?"
Michael just grinned and put his arms around Maria's waist.
Not to be outdone, Max pulled Liz back against him and began
rubbing her neck. "She's the one," he said happily.
Liz smiled and shook her head in embarrassment, trying to keep
her mind on her theory.
"Okay, here's the upshot. In the animal world, different
species mate different ways. Some have lifelong, monogamous
relationships and some just join together for the purpose of
species propagation. Now, since we know nothing about you guys,
really, it's just a guess, but something has triggered a drive in
Max and Michael for both. They have been after every girl in
sight trying to find 'the one', at least that's what they call
it."
Michael smiled, "The one."
Liz looked at him, still unused to the new Michael.
"Right. And this 'one' would be their life mate, starting
now. So it seems to me the best thing to do is to keep them from
being out of the house, keep them from finding some girl who will
take advantage of their...condition and become their life mate
unintentionally. Alex, can Michael spend the night at your
place?"
"Sure. Dad won't mind at all, and now I'll have someone to
watch 'Touched by an Angel' with," he shrugged.
"Good. Keep him inside, however you have to. Isabel, you'll
have to keep Max in the house all night, too. I'm just praying
this will end before tomorrow, or we'll have to come up with a
better plan."
Isabel frowned and shook her head. "I'm pretty sure this
will end soon. I don't know how I know, but know that it will.
Probably by morning."
Liz smiled. "That's the first good news I've heard all
day."
Maria grasped Liz's hand and pulled her out of Max's arms, who
let her go reluctantly.
"Excuse us for just a minute," she gave them all a
brilliant smile and walked with Liz a safe distance away.
"Do you realize what you're doing, Liz?" Maria began.
Liz understood immediately and avoided Maria's eyes.
"This is the most awesome opportunity to get Max to be yours
for life! How can you pass this up?"
Liz sighed, "Because it's not what he wants. He's told me
so. He wants space right now, remember? Doing that to him would
just...I would be using him. It's not right."
Maria grabbed her by the shoulders. "Liz, you're not
thinking clearly. He loves you, you know that, he knows that. You
ARE the one for him."
"Maria, I don't think you understood what I meant earlier.
They are different from us and this...change they're going
through is probably just the way their instincts preserve their
species."
"Huh?" Maria looked completely lost.
"What I'm saying is that those hormones are kicking in
because in their life cycle, it's time to find their mate for the
purpose of making a family. Becoming a life mate means also
becoming the mother of their children. So tell me, do you feel
like being a headline in the National Star?"
Maria's jaw dropped. "But, that's not how it works for us. I
mean, if it's not the right time of the month for a woman,
then...."
"I know that, Maria, but if on their planet the male
hormones actually initiate the whole process, then it may work
that way for them here, even with human girls. What I'm saying is
that it's not safe.... And I don't know about you, but I do not
want to be pregnant at 16. No matter who the father is."
Liz and Maria locked eyes for a moment, each recognizing the
element of frustration and fear in the other.
Maria sighed. "Then I guess we had better come up with a
plan 'B', because I don't see Max or Michael giving up
tonight," she said slowly.
Liz nodded. "You're right."
