Subject A1 (Part 5)

Liz tossed her purse down upon the floor the moment she stepped through the door, discarding her shoes just as quickly. She let the door close behind her, and slowly padded accross the spacious living room and into the kitchen.

The house was dark, and she was glad. After the night she'd had, all she wanted to do was pig out on ice cream, curl up in her bed and sleep for days.

But she wouldn't.

She would eat something fairly healthy, wash her face and brush her teeth, and lie down. Maybe after a few hours of late night television and waiting up for Kyle, even though he would never arrive, she would finally doze off.

Then she would wake up with her alarm at 4 a.m. the next morning and do it all over again. She would get dressed, go to the lab, and do her job. Just as always.

It was exhausting just to think of it, but it was what she'd chosen. It was her life now, and sometimes it was hard, especially now, but there was no turning back. There was no alternate path.

At least now she had something to look forward to. Max. Her alien. It didn't strike her the least bit strange that she had taken to calling him her alien. After all, he was hers. He was what she'd waited her whole life for, and she had been picked to take on the challenge of figuring him out.

Learning what made him tick. Learning him. She was the only other person allowed inside his room, other than Mr. Davies. The only other person in the entire lab who had seen him.

'Subject A1'. It was his name....at least it was the name he was meant to be referred to as. But she knew his real name.

Max.

She smiled in remembrance of the events of earlier. Hearing him speak, knowing that he trusted her enough to speak to her, had made her heart soar. It had meant everything, and he would probably never know it.

After he'd said those 2 single words to her, there had been nothing else. She had tried various tactics in order to get something out of him, but he had remained silent and still, his eyes never leaving her as she finished her work and as she had left. It was disappointing, yes, but she knew that she had to be patient. He would come around, in time. One day, he would speak to her. And she would learn, then. Learn everything that he would teach her. Everything about him.

Opening the refrigerator door, she searched around for something to eat. Milk, orange juice, coke, cold cuts, bagels. Sighing, she pulled out the bagels and orange juice. The junk food that she knew sat waiting for her in the cabinets and freezer seemed to call out to her, but she resisted temptation.

Kyle had mentioned to her that she had looked like she'd been losing weight since she'd started the job with the FBI, and she'd told him that she would start eating more. But the promise had been hollow, and nothing about her had changed since. She knew why that was; ever since college, when she'd gotten a little overweight from all the stress of schoolwork, she'd been obsessive about eating healthy. It wasn't until now that it had begun to backfire on her. She just never seemed to have enough time to eat, though.

Grabbing up her food and glass, she headed torwards her room, slipping on her fuzzy houseshoes as she passed the bathroom, nudging her door open with one knee.

The room was as dark as the rest of the house, but she didn't bother to turn the light on. Taking careful steps and stopping when she felt the bed's soft cushion against her leg, she placed her food down onto where she knew the bedside table was.

She quickly undressed, stripping down to only her underwear, and flopped onto the bed.

"Oooommphh.." A muffled noise came from somewhere below her and she shot up, crossing
her arms across her chest as she fumbled for the lamp switch. Her hands trembled so badly that it took her what seemed like forever to get the light on, but she finally did. There was a quiet click and then the room was flooded with a dim, rosy light.

Kyle sat up in the bed, chin propped up on his hand, glaring at her. "Hey Liz."

She frowned and dropped her arms, motioning for him to scoot over so that she could lie down.
"You scared the shit out of me Kyle! What are you doing home anyway? You're never home earlier than 3 a.m."

Her voice carried a sarcastic tone to it, which only managed to irritate Kyle further. "I took off early tonight."

Pulling the covers around her naked body and snuggling down into the soft mattress, her eyes were already drifting closed. "Why?"

She could hear his sigh, and her eyes shot open.

"Oh, God, Kyle, I'm so sorry. I...I just got so busy and.."

She watched him as he stood from the bed, pulled on his terry cloth robe and began to pace. "Yeah, I'm sure you did."

She sat up again, holding the covers around her shoulders. "What in the hell is that supposed to mean?"

He stared at her, and she could see the hurt behind all of the anger in his eyes. "This is just so typical of you lately, Liz. You're so damn busy working that you forget everything. Hell, you even forgot our anniversary. Isn't that the man's job?"

She made a loud snorting noise, and rolled her eyes at him. "Oh c'mon Kyle. Like you can even talk. Who is it that leaves with me every morning and comes in at 3? Certainly not me. The most I ever see of you is when you decide to barge into my office during my job and try to make up for
all of the times when you're gone."

He didn't respond to her words for a moment, only stared hard at her, his eyes unwavering. "I'm glad you felt free to tell me how you felt."

He turned and walked away before she had a chance to say anything else, only stopping when he was just outside the bedroom door. "I think I'll just go sleep at the office tonight."

The door slammed shut behind him, and the last noise that she heard from him was the beeping of the alarm system signaling that the front door had opened...and closed.
