Subject: A1 (Part 19)

Long after she had read the letter, his words still echoed in her mind. Her tears had dried on her cheeks hours ago, leaving stiff tracks on her skin. And yet she sat on, staring out at nothing. Thinking of Mr. Davies and all that he had been through, all he'd lost and everything he'd done for her. How stupid and cruel she'd been. She thought again of all of the people that, at that very moment, sat caged up in those glass rooms, and she knew what she had to do.

It tore her apart inside, but she knew that there was no other choice. She had to go back.

Mr. Davies had done so much for her that she'd never even known about--all to keep her safe from the things he'd gone through. He'd risked her hatred just to be sure that she never had to face the same choices. But she still had to go back. For her, for Max, for Mr. Davies, for them. She didn't even know what she could do, or if there was anything she could do, but she couldn't just walk away. Not without regretting it for the rest of her life. All of her life she'd lived for others, done what everyone expected of her. She was doing that now, only for the first time in her life, she knew that what she was doing was the right thing. Those people in that lab, aliens or not, didn't deserve what was happening to them. And even if she went back and never saved a life, at least she would have tried.

Max.

She loved him--he was all that she'd ever wanted, and she was giving him up.

It was going to be hard, harder than anything she'd ever done, but he would understand. She knew that he would. It was hard to believe that she was leaving him just when she'd finally gotten him. 'Thank you, Mr.Davies.' Just because he hadn't been able to make a difference didn't mean she couldn't. She would make up for both of their mistakes.

When he woke up, he knew immediately that she wasn't beside him. It was dark outside, but he could make out the faint light coming from under the bathroom door. Standing up, he made his way across the small room and to the bathroom. She was taking a bath, her hair bundled up on her head, her eyes closed. He smiled to himself, going to sit down on the edge of the bathtub. She was so very beautiful.

"Liz?"

She opened her eyes, and a smile formed on her perfect lips. "Hey sleepyhead."

"Hey. Getting all cleaned up for me?"

She nodded. "Yep."

She was smiling, but he could tell that something was troubling her.

"What's wrong?"

Her smile fell. She wasn't very good at hiding her emotions from him. "Mr. Davies wrote me a letter."

He shrugged slightly. "What did it say?"

She pointed wordlessly at the two sheets of paper that sat folded on the sink.

He read the letter quickly, and she watched his face carefully as he did. She could tell that he was troubled by the letter. She was even more troubled by what she was going to have to tell him.

When he was done, he carefully refolded it and sat it down on the floor.

For a long time he stared at her, trying to form the right words. "Wow."

"Yeah." She reached for his hand, and he grabbed onto it, squeezing tightly. "Max, I have to…"

"Go back. I know."

"I'm sorry."

He looked away from her, trying to hide the tears that he'd thought were gone. "I understand."

"I'll always love you, Max. And I swear, one day we'll find each other again. We'll be so happy."

He nodded, still not looking at her.

"I just have to do it. I wouldn't be able to live with myself…."

"Thank you."

"For what? For leaving you?"

"No. For caring so much. You just don't know how much it means."

"Thank you for loving me."

They didn't say anything else as they sat there together, just being comforted by each others' presence. No words were really needed.

Soon they would be separated once again, and all they wanted to do was remember what it was like to be together.
