Subject: A1 (Part 15)

Escape. No.

Had she heard him right?

She opened her mouth to ask him, but the young man was already gone, disappearing around some unknown corner.Once again, she began to run. She still had no idea where she was going, but at least this time she had a purpose. To find Max.

There was no way to know for sure, but somehow she just knew that it was him.

His chance had come, and he had taken it.What about her? She came to an abrupt stop, clutching her hand to her chest as it heaved for breath. He was already gone by now, probably miles past the isolated building.

Running for his life, running without a thought of what he was leaving behind him.How could she blame him?

It wasn't as if she had really meant anything to him--she was just his guard, another one of the obstacles between him and his freedom. She had just allowed herself to believe that he had truly cared for her. That they could overcome the circumstances. What did that mean, though? Everything else she had believed in turned out to be a lie--that might as well be too. She didn't bother to run anymore. She wasn't even sure of when she started walking, but when she came to her senses she realized that she had been. She moved slowly, almost painfully.

When she looked up, she was standing in front of the exit.So this was it. This was what the beginning of the rest of her life looked like. A back door. Sighing, she cast one last backward glance at the long, empty corridor that stretched behind her.

Her past. And all that lie before her was wide, open desert.

Could she really leave all of this--all that she'd worked for so hard? Could she give it up so quickly, for something that had been completely out of her control?A memory of Max formed itself in her mind, and she smiled.

Yes, she could.Turning, she walked away. She didn't make it very far. Mr. Davies was in the parking lot, trying to look like their meeting was a coincidence. Why did she know better? "Mr. Davies." Her voice had not lost any of the frost from before.

"Mrs. Valenti." His hadn't either. They regarded each other coldly, both of them refusing to look down. And even though it hurt her to look into the eyes that she had trusted for years, she didn't break the eye contact that they held. "I guess you won't be coming back, then."

She shook her head, an early punctuation to her words. "No. I'm going someplace where I won't be lied to."

"Good luck finding such a place."

She felt the fire flush her face. He had to win, always. She wasn't going to let him this time. "I know that Max got away. One of the others told me. Don't you understand? You've lost!" We've both lost.

"No, I haven't lost. I just never played the game."

"But you did! You were part of them, you kept the secret! You allowed all of these horrible things to go on. You lied. You're no better than anyone else at this place."

"I'm sorry, Liz, that you don't understand. Someday you will. I promise."

"No. I'll never understand how you could live with yourself while living creatures were being murdered around you, by your consent. For no reason. Because of your own fear. That is something I will never understand, or forgive." She couldn't help but notice how sad he suddenly looked.

"Of course you feel that way." As she began to walk away, she felt his hand on her arm."Wait."

"What?" She shrugged herself away from his touch.

"Holiday Inn. Room 238."

"What are you--"

"Just go there. Please. Trust me. I know it's hard, but just this time--for old time's sake. Trust me."

"But what?"

"Go." He was the first one to walk away. She only stood, watching him leave, not knowing what to do or what to believe. She had never even noticed the envelope he'd slipped into her pocket.
