Author's Note: Again, I remind you I am trying to make this an
angst fic, so I hope it's not as happy as my others, and it's at
least minimally sad...but I was never good at angst... I'm not
making this fic long, because I don't want to drag it out. So it's
the last part, I'll try to make it as long as I can.
Oh, the Places You'll Go (Part Two, the Conclusion)
Maria and Liz sat in the car, driving along the road that
would take them to the airport, and their fate. "Do you
think they'll leave?" Maria asked, beggining to calm down
after her hysterics.
"I think so Maria, I mean everythings out, if they stayed
they'd just get killed or tormented, or worse. They know that, we
know that, I just wish things were different. Y'know, if they
were human, and the only problems we had were him making eyes
with another woman! I mean even that would be a little easier.
But this, no this is torture." Liz looked over at Maria.
She was staring out the window, no doubt she was thinking of
Michael.
"We're here, lets go." Maria yelped as she she opened
the door and slammed it shut, Liz followed her in doing this, and
they jogged inside. They searched the whole downstairs and then
finally found then sitting in the airport chairs waiting for
their plane to arrive.
Isabel saw them first. It seemed like Max, Michael, and Isabel
had an agreement. They were going to take turns saying their
farewells. Isabel walked over to them each. "Did Alex
come?" she asked hopeful.
"Oh God, Is, I'm sorry I didn't even think to call
him." Liz apologized to her.
"I'm here, I'm here!" all three of them heard from the
escalator. It was Alex.
"Alex, how did you get here?" Isabel asked him,
confused by his presence but obviously happy by it.
"Well I went to Liz's to ask her something, her mother told
me she had some business to get to at the airport and would be
back later tonight, so I assumed it had to do with you guys, so I
came as fast as I could." He was out of breath from running
around the airport. "Geesh it took me forever to find you in
here."
Maria and Liz took this as there cue to leave, sensing they
wanted to have some 'alone' time. Both of them knew Alex and
Isabel were as of now, just friends, but they knew if things had
gone on as they were, they would've been more in a few days, or
weeks.
"So your leaving huh?" Alex said as he saw Isabel grab
her bag and tighten it around her shoulder.
"Yeah, things have come out, everything about us is in the
open, I'm leaving and so are Max and Michael, we're all going in
different directions as soon as we get to Illinios. Then we
split. I have no idea where I'll be going, maybe it's better that
way." Isabel saw the shocked and dissapointed
look on his face.
"I see, well then I guess this is good-bye then," he
said, trying to remain composed.
Max saw Liz standing in the middle of the waiting area, and he
walked over to her. "You came." He was so happy she had
come, deep down he knew she would, but his paranoia always kicked
in.
"Max, there is nothing on this earth that could've kept me
from spending these last few minutes with you." Liz realized
words were no longer good enough for this meeting, Max realized
it too, they kissed a deep soulful kiss, not caring that people
were watching, not caring what anyone
thought.
After it ending, they leaned there foreheads against each others.
Eyes pleading for them to stay together.
"Max, do you think I'll ever see you again?" Liz asked.
Her tears finally kicking in, and forming in her eyes.
"Liz I promise you, that when we leave, if we can remain
normal people, and can be 'unfound' for awhile, then I will come
back to you, I'll come back, and we'll have the greatest life.
Together." Max wiped a single tear that was falling on her
cheeck.
"What if--" Liz was cut off by Max's finger covering
her mouth.
"No, no 'what if's' I don't even want to think about that,
so just don't ok?" Max smiled when he saw Liz's nod.
"Ok".
Maria walked over to where Michael was sitting, he smiled at
her, she smiled back at him. She noticed that he was about to say
something, so she cut him off. "Michael, saying good-bye to
you earlier tonight was hard enough, just don't say anything now,
just hold me for this brief moment in time, so for now I can
imagine that the world is ok, and nothing is the matter, even
though inside I feel like I should die right now." Maria was
crying again, for the billionth time that day.
Michael saw the deep hurt in her soul when he looked into her
eyes, "Sure," he said as he opened his arms to her.
Usually he shied away from public displays of affection with
Maria, and she didn't usually mind. But now, both of them needed
it. For a last time, they needed to be held, comforted,
even if the ending result was going to be tragic.
After about 5 minutes of this hugging, Max and Liz's talking and
hugging, and Isabel and Alex's 'saying good-byes', the words none
of them wanted to here. For them, it was like calling the time of
death. "Flight 129 for Illinois is now boarding, flight 129
to Illinios, please board." All 3 couples looked at
eachother with longing.
Alex looked at Isabel and kissed her, quickly yet sweetly.
"So that's what it would've been like," he said as he
placed one of her bags over her shoulder.
"I'm going to miss you so much Alex, I really will, and you
never know, maybe someday." She added as she grabbed her
stuff and walked over to wait for Michael and Max.
"No, Max, I haven't had enough time with you yet! No, not
yet, please!" She pleaded, she was fighting a useless
battle.
"Liz, I have something for you." Max said calmly, as he
reached into one of his bags, and handed Liz a book. "To
remember." He passed the book to her.
Liz looked at it for a moment. "Max, I've always loved Dr.
Seuss! Thank you." It was the book 'Oh, The places you'll
go'.
"There's something for you to read inside of it, when you
get home read it, and whenever you look at it, remember me, will
you?" Max asked.
"Max, whenever I look at the stars, the grass, school, or
even a piece of tape, I'll think of you. I'll never forget. I
love you so much, I could never forget." Liz held the book
close to her heart until Max briefly kissed her.
"Max, I have something for you too." She stopped and
took off her necklace of a small stone off her neck, and placed
it in his hands, "To remember me by," she said. Max
smiled and his heart broke again when touched her hair, for the
last time in awhile, if ever.
"Until we meet again," he said when he hugged her,
breathing her in, then he walked away to wait with Isabel for
Michael. Liz stood there watching him walk, bawling her eyes out,
knowing that her only love was walking away from here. Till God
knows when. It was too much for her to take.
Maria pulled away from Michael, kissed him on the cheack and said
"Bye," then she walked away, knowing if she looked
back, she might never leave at all.
She did hear Michael call "Bye Maria" after her, which
made her even more sorrowful. She walked to Liz, and cried on her
shoulder, while Liz did the same. Alex had left after Isabel had
walked away from him. He went back home, wondering what if.
Liz dropped Maria off at her house, promising to call her
tommorow.
Once Liz was in her room, still crying from her departure from
Max, she opened the book and on the inside cover she read what
Max had wrote, in his handwriting, with his pen, with his hand,
she read outloud in her room.
"Dear Liz, I hope this book will explain all I know you'll
do in the future, I know you'll go places, and those places will
be your wildest dreams. I know you'll make it big in this world,
And I am so sorry that for now, I can't be with you." Liz
had to stop a moment, she had to wipe her tears
from her eyes and take a deep breath in. "I'm also sorry
that I couldn't give you all you wanted, I know you wanted me to
be normal, to be human, and for that alone I will regret all my
life. But I want to thank you for being you, and for letting me
be a part of you. I love you more than these words I am writing
can explain. I want you to know, that when you do go places, when
you travel, fall in love, meet people, and make a name for
yourself, just don't forget about me. Oh Liz, the places you'll
go, I know you will. I can promise you now, I will never forget
you, and never forget our time together. Good-bye Liz, Love
forever, Max."
Liz had made a fairly large wet stain on her bedsheets by now,
because she was crying uncontrollably. Her first instinct was to
call Max and tell him she loved him, but never again would she do
that, never again.
