Through the Looking Glass: The Arrival
After Max Evens brought me back from death I thought my life could not get any stranger. I was wrong, and this last week has shown me that. I met myself and I realized that some things are universal, even across different realities. It was an experience that I know Max and I will never forget, not only because we saw mirror images of our life, but also because we FINALLY got together. It all begin when Max and I went to meet River Dog.
Liz Parker
Liz looked around her and shivered. She looked up at her
companion and could not help but be happy. She was alone with
Max. Yes it was cold, and dark, and they were lost, but she was
with him. She felt safe with him.
She heard a sound behind her and turned around. There was a faint blue glow off in the distance. She tugged on Max's shirt and he turned to look at her. "Look over there." She pointed to the light. "Do you think there could be people there?" she asked him.
He looked at her and shrugged. "I don't know, but it wouldn't hurt to go look." He grabbed her hand and they headed off towards the light.
As they got closer the voices got louder and louder. The words
were indistinct but Liz could tell that there were a lot of
voices involved. Just when they were about to reach the clearing
the blue light intensified. The voices grow to a yell and Liz
felt herself being pulled away. She called out to Max but no
sound came out. She tried to look at him but she realized she
could not move. As the blue light engulfed her she felt herself
falling. Then all was dark.
The first sensation she felt was warmth. She felt like she was being wrapped in a big soft fuzzy blanket. She wanted to feel this way forever.
"Liz!"
She frowned. Someone was disturbing her. The voice was calling her, taking her away from the warmth.
"Wake up, Liz!"
The voice was more frantic now. She felt herself being moved, the warmth was leaving her. Her body felt tingly.
"Come on, Liz. Please wake up!"
She recognized the voice now. It was Max. He was calling her. She opened her eyes and saw his concerned brown eyes staring down at her. "What happened?" she asked. She tried to sit up and it was then that she realized that the warm feeling she had felt was Max. He had been holding her in his arms. Before she could drift off about being in his arms he answered her question.
"I don't know what happened. We were walking to the clearing when the light engulfed us. When I could see again we were here. You were out cold."
"Where are we?"
"We seem to be back in the city. But it looks a little different." Max stood up and helped her to stand. She was a little wobbly so he held her hand while she regained her balance.
She looked around and noticed that they did seem to be in Roswell. They were standing at the end of a familiar street. "Max, it's the Crashdown. Let's got there, maybe Maria can tell us what happened."
Max nodded his head and they walked towards the café. When they opened the door they heard the opening from 'Close Encounters' playing.
"When did that get put there?" she asked as the music stopped.
Max shrugged as they walked towards a booth with a UFO shaped table and sat down.
A short girl with curly blond hair and blue eyes came up to them. "Welcome to The Crashdown, can I help you?"
Liz looked at her in shook. "When did you start working here?" she asked.
The blond girl gave her a funny look. "I have been working here for a long time." She turned around and looked at a tall dark skinned girl, "Liz!" she called out.
The girl turned around, "What do you want Maria?"
"How long have I been working here?"
"You have been working here for as long as I have."
The blond turned back and looked at Liz and Max. "There you have it from the owner's daughter. I guess I will come back later. Call me when you are ready to order." With that she turned and went to help a young couple sitting in the booth across the way.
Liz turned and looked at Max. "What is going on here? Who are these people? When that girl Liz turned around I had a strange feeling like I knew her."
"Well our waitress, Maria, did call her Liz and said that she was the daughter of the owners of the restaurant. Maybe she is you."
"What? So are you saying that blue light somehow put us into some alternate universe where I am a exotic looking Hispanic person?" Liz gave him the same look she gave him when he told her who he really was.
"Stranger things have happened," he replied.
Liz looked at him and laughed. "Your right, I should not be surprised after what has happened." She smiled.
Further conversation between the two was interrupted by an argument going on in the both behind them. Liz turned to look and froze when she saw one of the men pull out a gun. She turned to look at Max and saw the same look on his face.
"Is this--" her question stooped when the gun went off. She turned and saw the dark haired girl- Liz fall.
Their waitress Maria kneeled down. "There is so much blood!" she said.
Max stood up but Liz put out a hand and stooped him. "What are you doing Liz? I have--"
"If this is an alternate reality then you don't have to do anything," she interrupted. He looked at her with confusion on his face. "Look!" she said as she pointed to two boys across the way. They were arguing.
"I can't stop the bleeding!" Maria cried. At that the blond pushed the dark haired boy away and vaulted over the counter.
"It's already being taken care of," Liz continued. She stood up and together they walked over to the counter. Liz leaned on Max and he wrapped his arms around her, holding her close. Both were reminded of the event that almost to her life away, the event that brought them together. Seeing the scene being played out in front of her, Liz shivered. Max pulled her closer and when the girl on the ground opened her eyes Liz turned and looked into Max's dark eyes. "Did I look that bad?"
He nodded his head. He turned to look back at the scene and found himself looking into the blue eyes the blond. He felt a shock go through him. Both of their eyes widened and Max felt a connection form between them. It was then that he realized that he was looking at himself.
The dark haired boy from earlier came up and broke their connection.
Max looked down a Liz, "Let's get out of here," he said as he turned towards the door and took her outside.
"Where are we going?" she asked. Her question was answered when a jeep stooped in front of them.
"Get in," the blond from before said. Max helped Liz up into the back and then got in next to her. She wrapped her arms around his waist and the jeep pulled away from The Crashdown just as the ambulance arrived.
