Torre Guaceto (15 kms from Ostuni)Torre Guaceto is located
on the Adriatic coast, about 15
km North of Brindisi.
The name of the area comes from the Arabic terms
"GAW SIT" that means "freshwater site".
In 1981 the Torre Guaceto wetland was included in
the List of Wetlands of International Importance
(the "Ramsar List") under the Convention on
Wetlands and it was declared
Special Protection Area by the Italian Minister of
Agriculture. The Nature Reserve is characterized by a salt
marsh area which extension is about 119,41 ha.
Lecce(75 kms from Ostuni)The old town centre of Lecce is undoubtedly characterized by the heritage of the Baroque art.
The Lecce Baroque has made this town deserve the name "Baroque Florence".
In fact, you can appreciate the magnificent sculptural decorations realized with the soft stone from Lecce in the local 17th century style.
We recommend you to visit St Oronzo Square, in the town centre, with the the patron saint statue and the presence of the ancient Roman amphitheatre.
Then St Croce's Church, that dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries and was finished by Giuseppe di Zimbal, represents the highest expression of Lecce Baroque.
Duomo Square offers us a very pictoresque view: the Palazzo Vescovile (the Episcopal Palace) and the Palazzo Arcivescovile (the Archiepiscopal Palace) form, together with the Cathedral (Duomo), another Baroque masterpiece of this land.
