Holiday at Golf Resort >>  Nightmare

7 December 2001

My parents decided to go to a golf resort for the weekend. Golf resort?!? Oh no. . .I thought I'd be bored stiff, being cooped up in the hotel room with nothing to do except watch television (Hey, I don't like watching THAT much tv!), but then my parents called my sister and I out to the golf course. Not to play golf, but to drive them around in the golf buggies! Woo hoo! I've always wanted to drive the golf buggy, or to drive something for that matter, and this would be a great chance to test my driving skills.

The weather to me was torrid, with overcast skies, the threat of a downpour any second, and fierce, chilly winds. To my parents, this was perfect weather! Hmm, I will never understand golfers. I teamed up with my mother while my sister went with my father. At first, I was tentative with the steering wheel and accelerator, but once we reached the first tee box, yeah, I floored it! My mom knew she was in for a long day, when we crashed through coconut tree leaves,  went full speed around sharp corners, narrowly miss ending up in the pond a couple of times, flew across the rickety wooden bridges and come to a really abrupt stop every time I braked. Actually, it was more of a squealing halt because I ended up locking the tyres and burning rubber. My mom branded me a reckless driver, among other things like hell driver and speed demon. I can't blame her, you would call your driver those names if you were violently thrown around every time you encounter drain covers and bumpy sections of the course, almost fall off the buggy because your driver would stomp on the accelerator even before you were properly seated, and not to mention have your cap blown off when your driver floored the pedal around a sharp curve! My sister had the good sense to drive a distance behind me, after the collision we had when I braked too suddenly. According to my sister, she could hear my mother yelling for me to stop or slow down even from afar. Hmm, I have to work on this devil-may-care driving attitude. . .Tomorrow, when we have another round again!

I woke up to the sound of coffee being made in our parents' room. I got up and saw that my parents were having breakfast on the veranda outside their room. Cool. I made myself a cup of Milo, fished around our food box for more goodies and went to join them. It was nice sitting out there when the sun wasn't so hot while having a lovely breakfast of oatmeal biscuits, cashew nuts and Jacob's soft fruity bars. I must say that those fruit bars are really tasty, better buy some more. While talking to my dad, I noticed a sort of fowl roaming about in the long grass quite a distance from where we were. My dad turned to see, and said that those were pak mien gai, which mean 'white faced chicken' in Hakka. I could see why they were called that, they had white cheeks, but I didn't see why they were called chicken, hmm. I thought they were really cute, and it turns out these little birds can run pretty fast on their long legs!

Anyway, it was another day at the golf course and I was surprised that my mother picked me as her driver, after the horrific time she had yesterday. Well, it looks like my driving skills improved tremendously today. Not only was the drive more pleasant, it was less hair-raising because I avoided the bumpy areas and slowed down before stepping on the brakes, unlike yesterday where I would stomp on the brakes while speeding. I took the initiative to drive safely, but I did nearly gave my mom a heart attack when I made an aggressive U turn. At least I didn't do it in jerking halts like I did the last time. :) I also made her squeal when I made a sharp turn onto the bridge!

Well, it was a great time. I now know that I'm not that BAD a driver, and that I like making sharp turnings, speeding and taking hell-raising risks (Uh, please don't tell my driving instructor!). Let's see how I will do on public roads. Who knows? I could be a very safe driver =)

8:30pm

My sister caused a commotion at our favourite restaurant just now. We like eating at this Shan Tung restaurant situated at the top of a hill, away from the city. It's an open air place, so that means we could enjoy the night breeze. . .And the bugs. We are not usually disturbed by the insects, but this time they sort of went too far! At first, there was a strange insect that stumbled blindly across the table in my mom's direction. She handled it very coolly, by smashing it a couple of times with the back of her spoon (Sorry, cruelty to insects ^_^). When I turned to look at my sister to make a sarcastic remark about that incident, I saw a big round bug on her sleeve. Her eyes widened when I told her, and when she finally saw it, she let out a high pitched squeal (I will never forget the million dollar look on her face!) and swatted at it to no avail. She panicked and got up, knocking over her chair while flailing her arms. I was dumbfounded! People turned to stare at her, while we just watched in amusement. I thought I was going to have some entertainment until she held out her arm to me. I have to say that the bug had quite a good grip, it took me two hard swipes at it to get it off. Har har, I caused quite a scene as well, because I was laughing so hard and banging the table with my hand. Sigh, looks like this has been a very interesting day.
