Uranus' Largest Moons

Uranus' moons

The pictures above and below show the five originally discovered moons of Uranus and are obviously the largest of Uranus' 21 known satellites.

Uranus and it's moons.

Uranus' Major Moons (Biggest to Smallest)

  1. Titania - 1578 Km in Diameter
  2. Oberon
  3. Umbriel
  4. Ariel
  5. Miranda
  6. Sycorax
  7. Puck
  8. Portia
  9. Juliet
  10. Caliban
  1. Belinda
  2. Cressida
  3. Desdemona
  4. Rosalind
  5. Bianea
  6. Prospero
  7. Setebos
  8. Ophelia
  9. Stephano
  10. Cordelia - 26 Km in Diameter

These moons are all ice covered. Miranda, one of the most interestingly featured moons of our solar system has a cliff on it 10 kms high and has very large grooves on its surface.

In comparison to these moons, our moon is 3,476 Km in Diameter. The Earth is 12,756 Km in Diameter roughly 3.7 times the size of the moon. When you consider how large our moon is relative to the Earth, the moons of the gas giants are very small in proportion to their host planets. In Uranus' case, it's largest moon, Titania is only 1578 Km in Diameter where Uranus itself is 51,120 Km's in Diameter. Therefore Uranus is roughly 32.4 times Titania's size! A much larger proportion than that of the Earth to its' moon.

Similarily, Pluto is less than twice the size of it's moon Charon. Which leads you to wonder, "How close in size do the moon and planet need to be before it becomes difficult to determine which is orbiting which?"
