Details from the engraving of the title page of Jacques Merlin "Quatuor Conciliorum Generalium" (Paris, 1524) (the entire page is reproduced below). The female figure on the left is entitled "Potestas Ecclesiastica", the Power of the Church. The figure on the left is called "Potestas Imperialis", the Imperial Power. As in most of the allegories on this page (including virtues and vices) these "powers" are personified as women. The Church is not bearing the triple tiara, which the engraver gives prominently to two depictions of the Pope.
