Homo habilis, 1972 Johanson & White

Homo habilis remains and tools have been recovered from a number sites in Africa. Notably at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania, and at Koobi Fora in Kenya by the Leakeys in the 1960s and 70s. Further important finds have been made at Olduvai Gorge in the 1980s by Don Johanson and Tim White. The skull displayed in the previous section is the most complete H.habilis skull yet recovered. It is known from its Kenya National Museum catalogue number, KNM-ER 1470, ER from East Rudolf, (Lake Turkana was previously known as Lake Rudolf) and was discovered by Bernard Ngeneo in 1972 at Koobi Fora in Kenya.
