Welclinux.jpgome to the Lucknow Linux users group!

This site is basically dedicated to Linux and similar good things. Here I tried to make this site as much informative as I can.

[Linux, What is it?]

Linux, you've heard the elite hackers always talking about it and scoff at you if you don't have it. Well heck, they make fun of you if you don't know the man pages from back to front. (That was a joke for us computer geeks, if your not laughing that means your not an ULTRA computer geek. Which I guess is somewhat a good thing. :P ) Well, it's time to finally get it and install it properly. Linux is another operating system besides Windows 9.x. It's much better and much more stabler than Windows could ever hope to be. This is because Linux was programmed from the ground up unlike Windows 9.x. Now, all of us that have a NT based system actually do have an operating system that is relatively stable just like Linux. But Linux is much more stabler. But NT based Windows systems (2000/XP) are a lot stabler than any other versions of Windows. But still aren't good for computer security and many other tools that are a part of Linux which makes it so wonderful.

Linux started way back when Linus Torvalds started making an OS. (Operating System) Him and his small team started developing it around 1991. It started as a small little project that they worked on every now and then, but it soon turned into a full time hobby and in 1994, Linux was out. The difference with this OS against all the others is that it was Open Source. Open Source means that the source code (the stuff that programmers sit around all day typing) that makes the OS possible is out for any programmer to get their hands on and make their own versions themselves. This also includes companies. Because of Linux, many companies have come about and become quite successful. Among them is Redhat, Mandrake, SuSEa.
