Glory and facilities maintenance sometimes do mix!
The old man and young boy in coveralls carried wrenches as they strode down the passages filled with wires and pipes. "Ever been inside a mechanical beastie before?" asked the old man. "Nope," said the boy. "Well, you know the basics. There are five guys and gals who operate five robots. Those robots combine to form what is called the 'Giant Robot.' And right now we're in its belly." "So when do I get to pilot?" the boy asked. The old man stopped and glared. "Never!" he said. "You're my apprentice and your job is down here. Comprende?" The floor abruptly jolted and the lights dimmed. The old man's face wore alarm. "Whoa!" he said. "We're going into battle! To the command station!" The 'command station' was an office tucked in the belly of the giant robot. The old man handed the boy a soda out of the fridge and they sat and watched the TV. "This connects to the cameras on the outside," the old man said. "We can see everything." Flames shot from the robot's feet and landscape rolled below. The microwave dinged and the old man took out the popcorn bag. The boy munched quietly as he stared. A silver streak glinted ahead. "A dragon!" he cried. The thousand-foot-long monster flapped toward them, bellowing flames. The office shook as the robot shot power bolts from its arms. But the dragon shrugged them off and charged. "Buckle up," the old man said. With a tremendous clang and jolt, dragon and robot clashed and tumbled earthward. The boy squealed and the room spun around, soda and popcorn flying everywhere. The giant robot's feet billowed fire, cushioning the landing. The robot powerhoused a mighty fist into the dragon's maw. The dragon swatted with its tail. Explosions echoed outside and robot and dragon lurched in a deadly dance. "Those fancy-pant, pastel-jumpsuited pilots need help again," the old man said. "Come on!" The boy followed him to a door. It
opened to a perch on the giant robot's belly button. And just a few feet
away, still locked in mortal combat, was the armor of the giant dragon!
And its belly button had a door!
"Jump!" the old man shouted. They jumped to the dragon. The old man and boy climbed inside, banging wrenches on pipes and wires. Steam gushed and sparks flew -- and then the floor heaved like a stormy sea. The old man retreated to the door. "Jump!" They jumped back to their robot. That instant, the dragon fell flat and burst into flames! "So what do you think now?" the old man asked. "Exciting!" the boy said breathlessly. "I still want to pilot, though." "Well, clean the command station -- and maybe later we'll take the big guy for a spin." The boy's eyes lit up. "Wow! This is the best job ever!" "Yep," the old man replied. "Best job ever is right here -- in the belly of the beast."
