The AUK Student Senate Has Cheated the Whole AUK

On the Wednesday 24th of February-Valentine's Day, The Student Senate lied to all 788 AUK students and faculty by CHANGING the legitimate AUK King, who was elected by voting,, by declaring another person as the king.

On the Valentine's Day, according to the AUK annual tradition a King and a Queen are being “ELECTED” upon the STUDENTS’ VOTE. This year, as before, the ballots were sold along with tickets to the students who wanted to attend the Valentine’s Party. In this ballot students had to choose the AUK King and Queen. The ballots were gathered and counted by the Student Senate on Tuesday evening the 13th of February. The person who got the majority of the votes for the AUK King, was an IR freshman named Pavel Milyutin.
In that meeting “SOME” members of the Student Government “suggested” to change the result of the voting and declare another person, named Azamat Bazakov the King of AUK ( the person who got the second place in the votes). They argued that the reason for their “suggestion” is that according to the Valentine’s Day “precedent” the King and Queen ought to be already a couple (Azamat and the Queen were a couple). “Another reason for the change in the vote count is Favouritism”, said Deborah Eisenberg. She believes that the people responsible for changing the votes were friends with Azamat, and they wanted him to be the king. In the same meeting after the chair of the Student Senate, Merdan halilov, explicitly objected to this suggestion the Student Senate came to the agreement NOT to change the students’ vote.
BUT, as we all know, the next evening, during the Valentine’s party, when the envelope containing the vote results was opened the King of AUK was declared Azamat!!!
The issue had been kept closed and the majority of the students do not even know that their Student Senate has cheated them all by changing their vote.
The Student Senate had a urgent meeting on Thursday 15th of February during which Merdan Halilov, resigned saying “It is a shame for me to be the chair of this government!”
On Friday so-called ‘Oppositional group of the AUK’ distributed a leaflet among AUK students ‘Votum of Impeachment’, which said that ‘some Senators didn’t consider the majority of the students opinion and abused their rights’. Also, this group suggested ‘to bring into consideration of the students community having SUCH people in the Senate’.
Here are the possible solutions:
1) Do nothing and let this happen again.
2) The Student Senate should make a public apology disclosing the truth.
3) Those Senate members who did the wrongdoing should resign.
4) The whole Student Senate would be resolved and there will be re-election.
Let’s respect our own code of ethics: “We will NOT lie, steal or cheat, NOR tolerate among us anyone who does”.

По сложившейся традиции, в День св. Валентина «были избраны» Король и Королева АУКа. Избраны «студентами». В этом году, как всегда, бюллетени прилагались к билетам на праздник. Тот, кто покупал билет, автоматически получал право выбора. 13-го февраля Студенческий Сенат вскрыл коробки с заполненными бюллетенями и подсчитал голоса. По результатам выходило, что Королём АУКа должен стать Павел Милютин (ICP 200).
Но, во время подсчёта, кое-кто из членов Студенческого Сената «посоветовал» слегка изменить результаты голосования и заменить Пашу на занявшего второе место Азамата Базакова (ICP 398). Причину этого совета они объяснили просто: Король и Королева должны были быть парой на момент выборов в День всех влюбленных (Азамат и Перизат парой были). «Вторая причина – это симпатия Сената к Азамату, - считает Дебора Айзенберг. - Его друзья просто надавили на некоторых членов комиссии, чтобы они выбрали Королем именно его». Хотя председатель Сената резко возражал против такого совета.
Однако, насколько мы знаем, на следующий день на празднике, когда был вскрыт конверт с результатами голосования, Королем АУКа был объявлен Азамат.
Все было сделано очень тихо, и большинство студентов не имело ни малейшего понятия, что их обвели вокруг пальца.
На следующий день, в четверг, Студенческий Сенат провел экстренное заседание, во время которого его глава Мердан Халилов выразил мысль, что председательствовать в ТАКОМ сенате для него – позор.
В пятницу группа студентов, назвавшаяся просто «Оппозиционной группой АУКа», без указания конкретных имен, распространила среди студентов листовки, названные «Votum of Impeachment». В них она заявила, что «некоторые из наших сенаторов не приняли во внимание мнение большинства и превысили свои полномочия». Также «оппозиция» предложила «вынести на рассмотрение студенческого сообщества целесообразность нахождения в Сенате таких лиц».
Возможные следствия происшедшего:
ничего не делать и позволить этому повториться снова;
Студенческому Сенату публично принести извинения за сокрытие правды;
лишить членства в Сенате тех, кто виновен в случившемся;
распустить Сенат и устроить перевыборы.
Давайте уважать собственный кодекс чести:
«Мы не будем лгать, воровать или обманывать и не потерпим среди нас тех, кто этим занимается».

Ситуация вокруг выборов Короля и Королевы вышла действительно очень неприятной. Кто-то обижен, кто-то возмущен, кому-то выпала редкая возможность «блеснуть», пользуясь ситуацией, в общем, история очень быстро получила огласку и причем какую- то односторонне-негативную. Студенческий Сенат, в данном случае выступающий в роли «фаворитистов и коррупционеров», хотел бы высказать свое мнение по данному вопросу.

Для прояснения ситуации необходимо вернуться к самому началу. Если все помнят, за две-три недели до 14 февраля мы вывесили объявления, где приглашали всех желающих обсудить празднование Дня святого Валентина. В назначенный день в 105 комнате собрались 7-8 человек, 2-3 из них – сенаторы. Здесь всеми на тот момент заинтересованными людьми, были обсуждены все детали до мельчайших подробностей. По этическим и другим соображениям были убраны некоторые номинации (например, the sexiest). Там же мы ОБСУДИЛИ номинации Короля и Королевы, и, беря в счет тот факт, что в истории АУКа Король и Королева ВСЕГДА были парой, мы убрали номинацию «Лучшая Пара», совместив её с «Король и Королева». Единственная ошибка произошла при оформлении: номинации «Король» и «Королева» были указаны порознь, а не вместе.
Подсчет же голосов производился уже всем Сенатом и Деборой Айзенберг. Но именно те, кто не принимал большого участия в подготовке праздника, вдруг решили, что голоса за Короля и Королеву должны подсчитываться порознь, а не вместе, как предполагалось изначально. Не придя к согласию (кворум СС –5 человек), мы в тот день разошлись. К слову, разница в голосах за Павла и за Азамата составляла всего 2 голоса.
На следующий день, тщательно проанализировав все «за» и «против», и самое главное – посоветовавшись с людьми, работающими в АУКе и вложивщими в организацию этого праздника однозначно больше чем, кто либо из нас, мы решили: Азамат Базаков и Перизат Ибраимова, набравшие вместе наибольшее количество голосов, победили в номинации «Король и Королева», как изначально и звучала данная номинация.
Что было дальше, все уже знают. Появилась виртуальная оппозиционная группа, подал в отставку Мердан Халилов; Билл Хансэн, совершенно случайно(!) заглянувший в 105 комнату, принялся громогласно убеждать Мердана и Дебору, что в отставку должен уйти не Мердан, а те «2-3 человека», заварившие кашу. Самое странное, что никто не изъявил желания выслушать НАШЕ МНЕНИЕ, хотя таким вниманием к НАШЕЙ РАБОТЕ со стороны и преподавателей, и студентов мы были явно польщены.
Мы также не имеем ни малейшего представления о том, почему вдруг Дебора Айзенберг решила, что кто-то был заинтересован в том или ином результате выборов, во всяком случае, это заявление является совершенно необоснованным. Кроме того, каким-то образом результаты выборов были РАЗГЛАШЕНЫ до церемонии награждения.
Несмотря на все грустные события, мы даже рады, что студенты принимают такое живое участие в жизни АУКа, и ОБОСНОВАННАЯ И ОТКРЫТАЯ критика со стороны КОНКРЕТНЫХ людей – это прекрасно. Единственное, чего мы боимся, это то, что, возможно, дирижируется этот оркестр не общественным мнением, а кем-то, кому не очень удобны пара не в меру активных сенаторов. А «увольнять» нас (к чему в общем сводятся их старания) могут лишь те, кто нас выбирал.
Мы хотели бы просто извиниться перед студентами, и самое главное – перед избранными Королем и Королевой за этот инцидент. Мы просто хотели устроить хороший праздник.

The situation around the elections of the King and the Queen is appearing to be very unpleasant. Someone is offended, someone is left in indignation, and someone has got a rare opportunity to show off using the situation. On the whole the story received a lot of publicity, more one-sidedly negative. The Student Senate, in this case playing the role of “favoritists and corruptioners,” would like to express its opinion on this matter.

To clarify the situation it’s necessary to go back to the very beginning. If everybody remembers we have posted some advertisements prior to February 14, where we were inviting all interested to come and discuss the celebration of the St. Valentine’s Day. Seven or eight persons came to room 105 at the appointed time, two or three of which were the Senators. Here all interested at the moment discussed all the small details. Due to ethical and other norms some nominations were deleted off the list (for example, the sexiest). There we discussed the nominations of the King and the Queen. Have taken into account the fact that the King and the Queen in the history of AUK were always a couple, we decided to cancel the nomination the Best Couple but also combine it into the nomination the King and the Queen. The only mistake committed was in design—the nominations “King” and “Queen” were put separately instead of together.

Counting of votes was already done by all the Senate and Deborah Eisenberg. But namely those who did not take an active part in the preparation and planning of the celebration of the St. Valentine’s Day suddenly decided that votes for the King and the Queen should be counted separately and not together, as it was agreed earlier. We went home that day without reaching a consensus (the quorum of the Student Senate is 5 persons). Just as a matter of fact, the difference in votes between Pavel and Azamat was only 2 votes.
The next day, having analyzed all the situation and, what’s the most important, having consulted with workers of AUK who have done much more than any of us for the celebration of the holiday, we decided: Azamat Bazakov and Perizat Ibraimova who have gained most of the votes won in the nomination “King and Queen,” as the nomination sounded originally.
What happened next—everybody knows. The virtual opposition group has appeared, Merdan Halilov resigned from the Student Government; Bill Hansen absolutely accidentally (!) stopped by the room 105 and started to convince in a very loud way Deborah and Merdan that it’s not Merdan who should be resigning—it’s those “2-3 persons” who caused the mess. The weirdest fact is that no one expressed desire to listen to our opinion, even though we were obviously flattered by all that attention to our work from teachers and students.

We also have no idea why Deborah suddenly decided that somebody was interested in such turnout of the elections, at least that claim has absolutely no grounds to it. Besides, the results of the elections were made public somehow before the ceremony.
Despite all the sad events we are glad that students take such an active part in the life of AUK, and credible and open critic from specific people is wonderful. The only thing that we fear is that perhaps that “orchestra” is conducted not by the public opinion but by somebody who is not comfortable with a couple of too active Senators. And we can be “fired” (and that’s what the results of their efforts are) can only by those who elected us.
We just would like to apologize to the students, and the most important, to the King and the Queen for that incident. We just wanted to make a good holiday.
