Can I Get a Job at AUK?

I am sure many of you ask yourself this question. On-campus job provides a great deal of opportunities: 1. You dont have to go anywhere; 2. You knew people you are working with before; 3. It is just fun. Now can you really get a job at AUK? I have been here for almost two years now and read majority of announcements that were on the walls of AUK and I am also one of the privileged people who hang out in 105 and other AUK offices and know what is going on. Guess what?! There were only two or three announcements for jobs available at AUK. But people always got hired. This year I just feel that there is a need for investigation on what is going on. There are ten places where you can get work in AUK. Here is the list and I hope that this information will increase your chances in being hired for AUK:

Admissions office: two jobs

Admissions campaign people (go around schools advertising AUK, help out during admission campaign in summer): Nadya (AAS junior) was among those who went through a tough competition to disseminate information about AUK in Bishkek schools. According to her, a group of students who expressed their desire to work in the admissions campaign had to make presentations about AUK in different universities and had only three days to do it. Those who successfully passed this test received the job. In order to apply for this job you need to give your resume to the admissions office. Admissions correspondence person (used to be International Students Coordinator)  tasks: advertising AUK for other countries and attracting foreign students.  This position was open in summer and one of the admission campaign people was promoted to occupy it. However, there were comments from international students about unsatisfactory work of the previous coordinator.

Career office (finding jobs for AUK students)

This position was long-promised by Kamilla Sharshekeeva and finally was created in fall semester 2001. There were couple events related to this office: presentation of a special research of an American professor who developed a special test for evaluating individuals abilities and qualities for different jobs and creation of ghost Translation Center (psst! It is a secret!) The current coordinator is mainly occupying computers in 105 downloading information from the internet for his other job. The services of the career office now cost 50 soms that are to be spent on advertising of the translation and private English lessons that our students can offer. you have to pay this sum if you got a job with the help of Career Office. There is a variety of student opinions about the work of Career Office:

Boris Bityukov (MM100) said Ruslan is doing his job well. He is teaching people to write resumes and sell themselves at such a young age. Azamat Ababakirov (ICP199) commented I do not see any results of what they [also other students working for AUK] have done. They are giving information to their friends/boyfriends/girlfriends. I do not ever see any announcements of jobs for students. The announcements from Career Office often are not for majority of AUK students. I do not have higher education yet and I am not over 22 and with 5 years of experience.  Whom are these announcements aimed at? asked Venera Urbaeva (ICP100)  Unfortunately, there is no information for how long Career Office person will be doing this job but you can always try to get a job in IREX-Moscow or as a sales manager full-time through this office.

PR assistant (press releases, AUK web-site, contacts with local media)

There are two senior journalism students working in the office now and it is not known how they where hired and why. There will be more jobs available soon because PR office is being expanded. Two web-designers were also hired but they did not start working yet and that is why the current events on AUK website are still Final exams 17-26 December 2001.

Alumni coordinator (keeps in touch with alumni, maintains a database of alumni)  Impossible to catch this person but I know that she exists and does her job.

Students who sit next to printer (look after printer, make you sign how many sheets you printed):  This job is quite easy especially after the journal for signing up expired, you just have to sit next to printer and put the paper in when the printer is out of paper.

New International Students coordinator

(not yet defined but deals with the problems of international students - visas, accommodation, problems with militia, sometimes interpreting etc.). The Star wrote about this position in our last issue. It was not advertised because this person had to work closely with ex-Student Affairs Coordinator Victoria Lavrova (who is now in Indiana studying for her Masters) degree) and she selected 5 or 6 resumes from Career Office of people with whom she would want to work. The question is in the air, it is interesting how the process of employment will go. It would be nice to ask international students if they have any comments about this position. In Vidzeme University (Latvia) every international student when s/he comes receives a special local angel to help with getting used to the new environment. Would it be possible at AUK?

Sound producer (the one who takes care of the mics when there is something going on in CH/1):

It exists but you need to come to 105 and ask if there is a vacancy, it never was advertised.

Orientation week (make sure that freshmen get a proper introduction to AUK):  Freshmen should remember those students who helped them around. Show up in 105 when it is close to August and ask if you can help. The whole program is made up by students and 105.

Brand New !!! and Advertized!!! Student Affairs Coordinator

There are 11 candidates and President Huwiler is in the process of choosing the One (or the Two).

I asked President Huwiler who was responsible for on-campus employment about the process of employment also expressing my thoughts about the efficiency of the work that students perform. His comments were the following (selected from a longer piece):

I like to hire internally when possible, because working with a person is the best way to know how he or she will perform. Other things being equal, I prefer to hire people who have worked for AUK and have demonstrated competence and commitment. In my (somewhat biased) opinion, if it comes to a choice between hiring someone with the right resume or hiring someone with the right personal characteristics, Ill take the person with the right personal characteristics every time. Job skills can be taught. Reliability, integrity, creativity, etc. cannot.

Do you still think you can get a job at AUK?

In order to be employed you need to:

know somebody who knows that there is a vacancy

date somebody who knows that there is a vacancy

hang out in the above-mentioned offices

least likely: read advertisements.

Will we not Cheat?

Before writing this article, I asked students whether they have ever seen anyone at AUK cheating on the exam. When heard such a question, respondents looked at me as if I was crazy. For them this was an odd question because, as one of the said, almost everyone does it (cheats) here.

During Barrie Hebbs examination in Intro to Microeconomics class five students were given F for the course for not obeying professors behavior policies during the exam. The students who got Fs argued that the penalty imposed was too strict and unfair. They claimed that they did not cheat but had asked or were asked for an eraser during the exam. There was no additional staff to watch over students and testify to the students claims. However, the students dont deny having been talking or coming to a contact with others during the exam. It was a multiple-choice exam that was written in two languages. Mr. Hebb articulated that students could not talk or cheat. Students who took the exam say that Mr. Hebb made it also clear that if students would need an eraser or had any questions during the exam, they must not talk but raise their hand, wait for the professor and ask the professor only.

To resolve the issue the Petition Committee has gathered. The Committee argues that due to insufficient evidence, it would be unfair to fail all those five students. I would better let some students go unpunished, than to punish someone innocent. If provided with all the evidences, I would support severe penalty in any case of academic dishonesty, said David Huwiler, president of AUK and Academic Senate chair. Professor Hebbs position is different: I do not think my grading is unfair. Out of one hundred students who knew my exam regulations, only five decided not to obey. When given the instructions before the exam, none of the students objected and for most of the students the rules of behavior made sense.

The Committee suggested two ways out. One solution would be to give F to those who violated the exam rules for the last exam, and consider this grade as well as others students had during the whole semester (midterm, papers and seminars) when giving the final grade for the course. The second way out was to give an additional exam for the five students and give the final grade based only on the results of this exam. The Academic Senate decided to give these five students an opportunity to retake the exam. Any other student in this course could also re-take the exam.

Some students who took this course believe that Barries penalty was fair, but not the Academic Senates decision. It could happen only in AUK. All students who were on that exam wrote TOEFL when entering the university; they knew that even if you turn around during the test you would fail. Barries penalty is very fair, said Vitaliy Holodyuk, Business senior. Azamat Ababakirov, another ICP student in the class says that the rules on the exam were fair: F for a talk is an adequate penalty, especially for the given conditions.  Some others who did poorly on the exam and who failed state that Academic Senates decision was correct. Academic Senates decision gives opportunity to those who got bad grades on the last exam and those who cheated to prepare better and get better grades. This is beneficial, and if this is beneficial therefore it is fair, argues Renat, Economics freshman.

The decision has been made. Students have written the exam again. Barrie Hebb was asked to stop teaching at AUK.  Mr. Huwiler denies any link between the exam and Hebbs being fired: This is absolutely not connected to this whole issue with the microeconomics exam. Barrie Hebb does not know the reasons why he was fired: There was no official document stating why I cannot teach at AUK. I was verbally notified that I could no longer work here. I love my job, my students and if given the opportunity, I would continue teaching my Economic History class tomorrow.

Neither CEP office nor Economics Department received an official letter that would state the reasons for Mr. Hebbs dismissal. Professor Hebb is a good specialist. Moreover, we, starting from office manager to all professors on the program, have always had a friendly relationship with Barrie, says Munara Artykovna, Economics Department.  I do not want students to understand from this episode that they are going to get off the hook when cheating. It is important for them to understand that we take academic honesty seriously, comments Mr. Huwiler. Hopefully this will be the case. Meanwhile students think it is easy to get by with cheating at AUK.

Academic honesty rules in this university are too soft and they do not work. The Code that we have is realized only once a year when students are asked to write an essay about academic honesty. It can be changed only if all professors enforce strict rules. If only foreign faculty does that, students will rise against these, says Vitaliy, Economics senior.  Cheating culture is a leftover from the soviet culture. Only in the hands of teachers is it to change something, says Talgat Irispekov, Business Sophomore.

We need very strict rules. I know that at Manas University one case of cheating is enough for students expulsion, regardless of this students previous academic standing, suggests Baktygul Turdubekova, Economics senior.  In different departments there is a different level of academic honesty. Most of our local staff is used to students cheating, they tolerate and do not pay too much attention to it, explains Fatima Gayazova, Journalism senior.  What we need is a different sort of exam assignments. Once I took a course where no one was able to cheat since we were given essay questions and those varied from student to student. On this exam no one could actually cheat, proposes Aibek, Law Sophomore.

These are just a few recommendations for a change. From conversations with students I realized that none of them thought that cheating is good. Even those who think that it is a part of our culture are welcoming a change. As Azamat Ababakirov says, if no change occurs, we would need to put up the other set of rules of academic dishonesty below the official ones so that everyone can read them and obey!

Hunger Strike for the Release of Deputy Continues in Kyrgyzstan

The hunger strike involving 362 people all over Kyrgyzstan continues despite the fact that its main sources of inspiration, human rights activist Tursunbek Akunov and leader of Coalition of NGOs for democracy and civil society Tolekan Ismailova, quit the strike on its 15th day. Their decision mainly came as an answer to a request by twenty-four NGOs to stop torturing themselves when this is unlikely to impact on government authorities.

Going on hunger-strike was the last resort of the desperate opposition after the arrest of deputy Azimbek Beknazarov who is accused of not instituting proceedings against an individual accused of homicide several years ago. The opposition claims that the case is of a political nature and that the main reason for Beknazarovs arrest was his initiative to impeach President Akaev for surrendering 90,000 hectares of land to China in 1999. The main demand of the strikers is the release of Beknazarov on the pledge of one of the members of a special Public Committee on Border Issues, or his written undertaking, not to leave the country.

However, there was no reaction from the authorities despite the fact that in Beknazarovs native Jalalabad region three schools were empty because parents did not allow their children to go to school in protest; there were pickets near the Jogorku Kenesh (the Parliament) going on for weeks; and each day, increasing numbers of people around the country joined the hunger strike. Some deputies of the Jogorku Kenesh also supported the protest and decided to meet with concerned citizens outside the Parliament building. On that day it was impossible to reach the Old Square of the city where the meeting was supposed to take place. The Militia was at every corner and students of the American University in Kyrgyzstan, which is located on this square, were unable to get through. Hundreds of people wanted to hear what popular deputies Omurbek Tekebaev, Alevtina Pronenko, Adaham Madumarov and Absamat Masaliev had to say. Around thirty people managed to reach the square to listen to the speeches and asking questions until the Militia broke up the rally. The deputies were accused of deliberate disruption of the Jogorku Kenesh session.

In other regions of Kyrgyzstan, picketers and strikers are threatened by imprisonment if they do not quit the strike. Government authorities are pressuring the Jalalabad electorate of Beknazarov to sign a petition affirming his incompetence in order to deprive him of his parliamentary seat. Despite its duration of two weeks, the strike went almost unnoticed. Four of the strikers were hospitalized. The majority of the main figures participating in the strike being in their 40s and 50s and in bad health, the hunger strike may be hazardous to their health. The youngest striker is 19 and the oldest is 72 years old. At one point, a government official showed up and invited them to a restaurant. Being aware that strikers are losing their strength, twenty-three NGOs wrote an open letter to the strikers asking them to quit. Two days after that, seven known public figures who according to the letter are needed in good health to continue struggling for democracy and human rights stopped the hunger strike. Other people, however, took their places, and the hunger strike goes on. Everyone is waiting for the court hearing on the Beknazarov case, which the opposition hopes will be fair and transparent.

As Assistant U.S. Secretary of State Elizabeth Jones mentioned in her recent meeting with students of the American University in Kyrgyzstan, the U.S. is aware of the human rights violations and the hunger strike in Kyrgyzstan and noted that she took up the Beknazarov case in her meeting with President Akaev. The international community is aware, but the Kyrgyz government authorities do not seem to change their policy in this case.

Letter to the Editor

I am concerned with the on-going problem of students cheating during the exams, and I am appalled with the recent case of the well-known Intro to Microeconomics. I am taking the side of Barrie Hebb against the students, some of the professors and workers of the third floor. I was a student in his class and I think I understood clearly that cheating can result in failing the course. I think this rule was understood because it was clearly stated during lectures, seminars, and in the syllabus. In addition Barrie Hebb articulated repeatedly this rule during the exams. He warned everybody that cheating was not going to be tolerated. I have to note that I dont know Barrie Hebb very well and I did not get an A (I do not know my grade yet, and I am not writing this letter in hope of receiving a higher grade.).

I think it was childish, ridiculous, and immature of those students that called their Mommies and Daddies to deal with Fs. Students, you have to realize that you are not kids ( ) anymore. I thought that students were mature enough to cope with their problems on their own. How long are your parents going to solve () your problems? Students Immaturity and childishness impressed me to that extent that I will have to treat them so.

Barrie Hebb is the most kind person and professor I have ever met. He was not harsh on the requirements for his class: he let you write either the midterm exam or the final. He gave as much freedom as you wanted and trusted you as mature students. Barrie Hebb offered you the most favorable conditions and you could not even take advantage of them. You could have written the first exam and get a good grade, and forgotten about the final exam. Was it hard to do so?

I am also very concerned with the plagiarism, which seemed, only seemed, be an intolerable event. Academic honesty became useful only as a rhetoric, but when it comes to practice, people (students, professors, other worker) try to avoid dealing with it. I agree with Barrie Hebb saying that there are two rules. However, I would add something to it. One of those codes is the Code of Honour, written and approved, (part of which is placed on the wall in the kitchenette in three languages for people to get it) and the other one is unwritten, but accepted, code in which plagiarism is not only accepted, but even encouraged and appreciated.

The rule of no plagiarism should be applied to everybody regardless of year of school, age, sex, nationality, race, and the amount scholarship received/not received by the student. I am saying should because it is not so. AUK has to impose very strict sanctions on students who plagiarize and cheat. I support Barrie Hebb on that he should not give even a D- for students who cheated on his exams, even if the Department Heads and their Mommies and Daddies threatened him. It will set a precedent for such actions, and students will use their connections to push for better grades. The third-floor should never fall into the trap of those students who fail a course.

Poetry

Wrote this today and named it - you!!!

I sit here missing you,

I just dont know what to do!

The music plays on

I picture you!

I am so scared to lose you

Too!

When you are near:

I sleep warm,

Now that youre far;

I cannot sleep!

Your heart is my gift best present ever,

Here is mine

Keep it safe,

Its all yours!

When I close my eyes,

I happen to see you!

When the phone rings,

Im hoping its you!

Everyday I wake up;

I wait for night,

Wane knows why?

I want to check my mail,

Knowing my LULU wrote to me!

Honesty is my goal

And.

My love for you is very strong!

What was before?

Is now my past!

I have started a new life thanks to you!

And thanks to you I know I am really loved!

I thank my lord for his blessings,

I love him and he loves us,

I believe in him and so can you!

God has put me on my feet again,

Now I am walking the right road,

I am not alone since youre with me!

Going crazy day by day

Are scaring people a lot!

New Year is soon

And Im having no fun!

This celebration is once a year and is the best,

But looks like might turn out to be the worst!

I really need you Hun,

But there is nothing you can do!

I dont blame you!

I made a mistake letting you go,

And now I suffer and miss!

Your family is important and ranks first!

I wont take that away!

May God bless you,

You do know that He really loves you!

I am sorry for hurting you,

All I can do is make your problems mine!

I trust you,

But

If you decide to walk the other road,

I will forgive you

And

Ill pray for you!!!

Issyk-Kul

Issyk-Kul Lake the pearl of the Asia,

You are the one on Earth.

My mysterious friend, you know what I mean:

Your waves are the witness of Historys Faith.

Your water is Holy for every Kyrgyz,

When it is hot you give us a breeze.

My favorite sunrise is here,

You are the diamond of Earth.

About Love

It was a very lovely place

Between two shady trees

And he was with a flushing face,

And he was on his knees.

He wished so much but I didnt dare

To tell her I love you,

He was afraid she wouldnt care

That all his words were true.

He was afraid that she would laugh,

He knew he looked so dumb

He thought that it could be enough

To kiss her gentle thumb

But then he though it could be bad,

It could insult her much,

And what would make her very mad

Could his kiss or touch

Then he decided not to fear,

And say, My dear lady,

I feel so great when youre near,

But she was gone already.

Postcard from China:

The Best Kept Secret in the World

By Evangelia Papoutsaki, Correspondant of The Star from Mongolia

My recent trip to China has left such strong impression on me that I decided to write this article to share with you my experiences from this amazing country whose image abroad does not always represent the real China and its immense potential. This is not by all means the full description of my trip to China, which as I now recall was full of anecdotes worthy mentioning in another article, keeping for here only the overall impression I have of the country.

I went to China without any specific expectations. I simply wanted to take a break from the

30 C in Ulaanbaatar and my rather stressful job and also meet some Chinese friends of mine, eat good food and shop cheaply (things I could not do in Mongolia).

What was the image I had of China? Something similar to what I was used to from the post-communist countries I have been living in the last couple of years: the communist grey blocks of buildings to mention just but one example. What did I knew about China? The Tiennamen Square massacre, the labour camps, the repression of Tibet, Chinese stir-fried noodles as I tried them in the West, a country of millions of people on bicycles and other such stereotypes Westerners carry in their minds, reinforced by the western medias selective representation of China.

What did I find in China? A country where the imperial ancient meets the super post-modern in the most dramatic way. Beijing left me speechless and in shock as I crossed the centre from the train station to my friends house. Surely this is no Beijing! Did I take the plain to the USA instead of the train to China? Was I dreaming? Beijings urban architecture resembled more a futuristic picture. The energy of the city is buzzing, lifts you up, and surrounds you in its magic aura that carries its imperial past and super modern present with such confidence that leaves you open-mouthed. Beijing has space, openness, light that floats you and carries you around. The post-modern buildings carry the stamp of Chinas immense cultural background, something that gives them originality and uniqueness: the sky of Beijing is a sight of its own as the roofs of all buildings, ancient and post-modern are a spectacle to be seen. Each one of them is unique as if the architects have been competing not only with each other but also with themselves, striving to go beyond their own capacity.

What can you do in Beijing besides hurting your neck by observing and admiring the buildings roofs? You can spend days visiting the Forbidden city, the Temple of Heaven, the Parks, the tea houses, the summer palace and all the other ancient well kept sites, or go for shopping and delve into the citys post-modern part. By shopping I do not only mean the cheap reproductions of Western products. Why would you go to China to buy a fake Timberland when you can get yourself an original Chinese jacket that combines the Chinese touch with super modern design? Chinese people are extremely creative. It seems that they can turn into art everything they touch. Their modern art galleries are a marvel to art lovers.

You want to eat? How much are you prepared to eat? Chinas dozens of different cuisines can turn your trip into a culinary tour where you can but simply spend all you time eating and tasting the hundreds of dishes that keep coming to your table leaving you overwhelmed but determined to try them all. Nothing of what I had tried in the West resembled to what I ate there. Yasmin, my CEP friend and fellow traveller, tried once to pronounce the manes of dishes she tried in the USA but no success, nobody had heard of them to our distress, as our Chinese was not good enough for ordering and there was no menu in English.

How are the Chinese people? Wonderful! Polite, friendly, smart, and not all as short as I was accustomed by the Chinese restaurant owners in the West. Beijing and Shanghai people are dressed smartly with good taste and walk with confidence. I had the chance to attend a sociology postgraduate class on consumerism at the Beijing University, where my Chinese friend is teaching. To my astonishment I saw students giving amazing presentations, full of energy and strong argumentation, fully involved in what they were arguing for, and with a sense of humour that would make them laugh and be full of life.

China is not a communist country anymore, as my Chinese friends would tell me. The name is there but in reality capitalism is working in its full force everywhere. Private enterprise is buzzing and competition is pushing for more choices. What is happening in China is an amazing phenomenon of a country in full transition but in a well-organized way. The Chinese have been working quietly all these years to build a country that soon will be a superpower at a time when the other communist countries collapsed by a sudden transfer to democracy that had no experience of. Perhaps this is a very positive image of China that I am giving here, as my Chinese friends said there are millions of poor people outside the big cities in the East of the country. Still though, china did take me by surprise as I felt its immense potential that draws energy from its extremely rich culture and past. By the time the West wakes up to Chinas potential, china will already be a superpower that can challenge the USA that has been left to reign the world unchallenged since the collapse of the Soviet Union.

From Student Government

Welcome! This is a new tool of communication between you, our electorate, and us, AUK Student Council. As you might know each department has a representative and then there are seven senators who represent the whole student body. We will write about our activities and achievements and welcome any comments from you.

NEWS:

Meeting with AUK Fatboys Manager

On Saturday September 19th representatives of SG met with Mike S[] , the owner of Fatboys. The issues discussed were:

Quality of Fatboys service

Quality of Food

Prices

There were numerous complaints from the students about these three items. Mike turned out to be very helpful and agreed to make changes. There will be suggestion box set up, the managers who work in Fatboys will have badges so that complaints can be made with names known, the staff will have special hats and aprons. Mike also gave us his phone number, which you can call if you need to solve your problem 68-08-15. He requested however, that students should be more polite with the staff and return plates and cups back to cafe. All the fifty cups bought this semester disappeared. Mike also shared his future plans with us, there is an idea to make a student pub in the inside yard of AUK building. Students will be able to hang out there.

Clean up of girls-locker room

That was done thanks to lobbying of SC Vice President Jazgul Ismankulova (AAS). Now girls have more space for their clothes and more fresh air.

Paper limit in the labs

SG wrote a letter to President Huwiler and Nancy Leland stating results of the small survey conducted at AUK. The numbers showed that an average student needs to print from 222 to 330 pages year for research papers, presentations, information materials and other tasks. We asked to increase the print limit up to 200 more copies for the Spring semester for those who are involved in intensive writing, say the seniors writing theses, and 100 more copies to the rest of student body.  There also were debate about chats (results in progress) and counter-strike championship between AUK and Slavyan. AUK won.

Senators to be removed

Aibek Ismailov (PSY 201) and Shuhrat Kamalov (ECO 201) are to be removed from the General Student Council due to their constant absences at the SC meetings. Their places will be taken by Boris Bityukov (MM100) and Maksatbek Asanbekov (KGS199). Azamat Bazakov (PSY 299) also has an unsatisfactory attendance.  Jazgul Ismankulova

Valentines Day

This year SG has a lot of plans for this lovely holiday. There will be elections of queen/king/Ms and Mr. Something Interesting, Love mail and also a contest for the best Valentines greeting. Saint Valentine Room 105 and Bitel Company invite AUKers and their friends to the Russian Drama Theater on February 14th at 3:30 p.m. , - !

From the Student Representatives in the Academic Senate

There have been four meetings of the Academic Senate (AS) since the beginning of academic year. As the name tells, the Senate deals with variety of academic or related issues. There are two student representatives, elected from the junior and senior classes, Merdan Halilov and Zulfiya Abdullayeva, respectively. Should you have any questions that you would like to clarify or raise for discussion, please dont hesitate to talk to us at AUK, or contact through email: [email protected].

The Academic Senate meets, if there are questions to be discussed, on Thursdays at 16:00. The proximate interval between meetings is two-three weeks. At the last meeting on January 24, 2002, the AS dealt with the regulations on transfer from and to other institutions, course repetition, structure of the Service Department, and also discussed the recommendations of the Appeals Committee. Soon, it will consider regulations on Academic Honesty and Computer Policy. The student representatives will also be raising the questions of reducing minimal GPA requirements for scholarships and for a degree with Honors. All suggestions are welcome.
