I finished a picture
Surreal and complex
With numerous details
For you to inspect
"Oh, that doesn't work,"
My stepfather said.
"It's too much!
It's too busy!
It's hurting my head!"
My mother said "Brilliant!"
All brassy and loud
When she saw my new art
And I'm proud that she's proud
"Oh, that doesn't count,
My stepfather said,
"She says all your art's good
While I'm honest instead."
I got me some praise
On the anthro-art site
I feel warm and fuzzy
And rather alright
"Oh, that doesn't count,"
My stepfather said,
"Those Furries are fuzzy alright -
In the head!"
I got complimented
On DeviantArt
(A site for all artists)
And boy, I feel smart!
"Oh, that doesn't count,"
My stepfather sneered,
"Everyone who comments online
Is weird."
I got an award
From the local arts council
As well as a grant
For a decent amount, still -
"That doesn't count!
It's only just local.
So, they like your art -
They're prob'ly all yokels."

From up by The Bay
Said I was the next Dr. Seuss
Or Erte
"But that doesn't count!
You're really a dork!
He's from San Francisco -
Books come from New York!"
