CLAUDE L. SULLIVAN

He purchased Lots 1-12 Block 15, So. Add., A Livery Stable in Mountain Home, in 1914. Lots 15-18 block 14 So Add (house, across street from Livery) was purchased in April 1913. The Livery was foreclosed on June 6, 1919. He sold the house on March 29, 1918 to Domingo Monasterio.
The livery was built in 1908? I found a picture of it under construction that showed that date written on it. Mother said that Claude built the Livery and the house across the street where he and family then lived during that time.

Claude was a Village Trustee of Mountain Home, Documented on Dec 9, 1915, court records, Elmore County Recorder’s Office.

Claude was Sheriff of Owyhee County for sometime. His first term in 1936, was decided by the toss of a coin, as the election was tied. Claude resigned his office in early 1950 and moved to Oregon.

Mother, Faye Randall Hawkins, and Mamie Tigard both told me that when they were very young they used to play in the loft at the Livery and also in the horse drawn hearse. Mamie told me that when her family first got to Idaho from Washington they stayed with Claude and Lou for awhile. Cattie had originally wanted to come to be closer to her mother, but by the time they finally came here grandmother Elizabeth was dead.

Subject: Feb 28, 1881
Dear Angie: Noted a discussion on the birth date of Aunt Lu, Mother had Feb 28th 1880 in her note book that she wrote down in the 1950's when I first started my family research. We know that you can't always go by grave stones, Grandmother Josephine's shows 1880. I believe that is where mother got the date, or was just confused as to the year, I am not sure. She always thought something was wrong, as Lu's had 1881, she thought Lu's was the one in error. Since all of mother's other info was correct I assumed 1880. The confussion bothered me (twins being born in different years) so I later decided to check further. I have found that the 1880 was in error, however, I never told mother as her memory on some things has not been good for some time and I didn't want to confuse her. To confirm the year I got a copy of Grandmother's death certificate ( Sept 11, 2000), it shows the above date, Feb 28, 1881. I also have checked a census record (1885) that shows they were 4 years old so would have had to have been born in 1881. They were not shown with the children on the 1880 census records. Hope this helps Take Care, Merla

Generation No. 10

11. NEPHI WILLIAM10 OWENS (ROBERT9, EDMUND H.8, WILLIAM7, WILLIAM6, WILLIAM5, WILLIAM4, WILLIAM3, RICHARD2, JOHN H.1)46,47 was born March 24, 1844 in McCracken Co, Kentucky48,49, and died October 3, 1927 in Bruneau, Owyhee Co., Idaho50. He married ELIZABETH ANN CAMPBELL51 Abt. 1867 in Helena, Lewis & Clark, Montana52, daughter of CAMPBELL and MARY WARD. She was born April 16, 1843 in Texas, Pike Co., Missouri, and died June 2, 1913 in Bruneau, Owyhee Co., Idaho.

Notes for NEPHI WILLIAM OWENS:
These notes are from Merla Becker: Nephi was born in Kentucky in March 1944. Robert and Catherine had apparently moved from Illinois to Kentucky after Isabelle was born, and then after March 1844 went to Ohio. Robert was with Catherine and children in Ohio prior to Sept 21, 1844, he and Catherine joined the church there at that time. After they joined the church, they moved to Nauvoo, (this information I found on page 385 of "Heart Throbs of the West" by Kate B. Carter). I found Nephi listed, at the age of three with his mother, Catherine Owens, and his older brother, Jarome (Jerome), (the three girls had died prior to this time) listed in the 2nd Group, Fifth Ten that set out from Iowa in the summer of 1847, and arrived in Salt Lake Valley Oct 2, 1847. The first of the wagon train arrived on Sept 29, 1947 and the last of the train arrived in the Salt Lake Valley on Oct. 2, 1847. (This information is from "Heart Throbs of the West" by Kate B. Carter Page 431). Robert was not with them at the time because he was serving in the Mormon Battalion, which he joined in early 1846. NOTE: in reference to Mormon migration from Ill. to Salt Lake City, Captain Edward Hunter said the Second hundred departed June 17, 1847 and arrived in the Salt Lake Valley Sept 29, 1847.

Nephi with his parents and surviving siblings are shown on the 1850 Population schedules in the County of Iron in Southern Utah.

Family Sheet Information from is Deer Lodge Montana Census 1870; Yakima Census 1885 & 1887; and the1900 Fed. Census, also information from Fay Hawkins, Alma Inez, Lois Hicks, Lucille Owens and Mamie Jackson.

The following notes were compiled by Arlene Davis: Nephi is listed on the 1860 census for Utah in Great Salt Lake Co, Union, page 265. He also is there in 1862. 1870 Montana Census, Deer Lodge County, Deer Lodge Twp. lists Nephi, age 26; Elizabeth, age 28; Margaret, age 6; Ann, age 2 and Catherine, 8 months.

The family was in Porter's Prairie Pct., King County, Washington Territory 1880 Census. Nephi was not listed. Elizabeth was "Head of Household", a farmer. In 1885 they were in Yakima County, Washington. Nephi was listed as a teamster. Sarah Margarette Glidden and her 3 children were also living with them; Annie and Catherine were not. By the 1887 Washington Census they were still in Yakima County, but Sarah was no longer listed, although her children were. In the Yakima County 1888 Tax List, Nephi is listed in Yakima (now Union Gap), $240.00. By January 1889 the family was in Idaho. In the 1900 Idaho Census, Owyhee County, Bruneau Twp., Elizabeth was in Grandview, Owyhee County and listed again as "Head of Household", with her sons, Robert (a stockman) and Elmer, and Polly. Nephi was in another precinct, but the cards were missing. By the 1920 census Nephi was in Bruneau living alone, and Elmer was living with his sister, Josephine Randall and her family.

Notes for CLAUDE LATIMORE SULLIVAN:
CLAUDE L.

Spoke to Myra on 3/5/2001:

Hard working man. Knew how to farm. Raise cattle. He grew lettuce, wheat, alfafa. He owned his own farm. Dug the farm out of the brush. He had the house built. Beautiful home. It was a big house three bedrooms, large living room, dining room and kitchen and bathroom. Two porches - one on the front and one on the back.

Didn't see the Tiffany's much. His brother came to visit - Zenos. Zenos liked to drink and would drop in on their family when he was near and riding the train. Grandma was kind of mad at Zenos because she thought he brought illness into their house and that Zenos was dirty that way.
George's mother died when he was about six years old. Two sisters were going to raise the children but they both got typhoid fever and died within a month of each other. Most of his family stayed in Utah.

He had cancer for 11 years. A horse kicked him and he had a growth on his leg. The irrigating boots and it was rubbing against there. By the time he had it taken off - it had turned to cancer. He had the worse cancer Grandma had ever seen in her life. Tried out anything they had ever heard of. They got a shot of water for $200 - they said it was miracle medicine.

Spoke to Jerry on 1/5/2002:

George died of cancer. Uncle George had a house on a farm where he worked. Grandma Myra was kicked out of the house at 13 and went to live as a housekeeper for the dentist. When George Hyrum started dying Grandma Myra was a teenager and went to live in Uncle George's house to take care of him until he died. The house had a big screened in porch where George Hyrum could sit.

Spoke to Grandma Myra on 3/5/2001:

She was aristocratic. She would dress up with a white hat and white gloves. Get in the old buggy and go down the road to go shopping. She had a little bit.

She had still born twins. Awful sick with her children. She had dream that her mother came to tell her that she would have a little girl. She was just starting her pregancy.

Down in Oregon on a farm. They were both from Utah. They were raised crops in Oregon. Then Grandma's father moved to Idaho.

After the older boys had become teenagers, William Briggs placed the responsibility of the farm on their shoulders. He bought a share in the Utah Idaho Sugar Company and went to work for them. In 1910, the Briggs family moved to Rigby. In this home Sarah Jane spent many happy hours with her husband and children. She was very fond of flowers and loved to work in her garden. Almost every Sunday she picked and arranged a bouquet of flowers to be placed in the meetinghouse.

14. James Green Johnston

----- Original Message ----- From: Anita Murdock To: [email protected] Sent: 3/24/03 11:11:41 AM Subject: RE: Thank You - Information about James Green Johnston's Family
I was happy enough finding the family connection, the copies didn't cost much, so no need to worry about the cost. Thanks for sending all the info as well! As I mentioned I don't have much info, but somehow we ended up with many family pics. I did look closer at the docs on Friday after I mailed your copy and saw that they were compiled back in the 1960's by a Mrs Wells. Her address is near the top left on some of the charts. (written rather small). We can both thank her for her excellent job of preservation!
Again, many thanks!

History of James Green Johnston and Family
By Norma J. Lambert
The eleven year old boy who was caught in a riptide and his small boat was being driven toward an out cropping of big jagged rocks on the coast Graemsay, Orkney Island, Scotland, was in real danger as his Uncle James kept repeating to his Father William Johnston as they stood on a rise in the island and watched the boy in his boat with his oars maneuver the boat to keee it from crashing into the rocks, the Father said: "The boy can handle it." And he did with his skill and understanding of the ocean and its tides, the boy made it safely to the shore where his Father placed his hand on his shoulder in approval.
Thru his life, boy and man, good times and bad, he could and did manage well. This boy was James Green Johnston. He was born July 16, 1868 to William Johnston and Isabella Green on Graemsay, Orkney Island, Scotland.
His mother died when he was nine years old, he was the youngest of ten children. He always had a compelling desire to do his share and to take care of himself. His Father built boats and fished from the ocean and he took a small boat and did his share of fishing and contributed to the families means of making a living. He always caught fish and the love of the water and fishing stayed with him thru out his life.
It was the death bed wish of his Mother Isabella, that his Father see to it that all the children leave the Island and come to "Zion" as the entire family had joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, due to the promptings of the Holy Ghost and the teaching of Elder William Petrie, a missionary who came to their home, seemingly as an answer to prayer, that they might know the true Gospel.
The children all came to Zion as Utah Church Headquarters was commonly called. James Green Johnston left his native Island at age 18 and came to Utah; he stayed awhile with his oldest brother William who was a Jeweler in Coalville, Utah. Then with his oldest sister Margaret who lived on a sheep ranch west of Salt Lake City, there he learned some about sheep ranching and he kept on traveling and came to the Blackfoot area, it was called Grove City then. He had $2.00 and paid part of that to cross the Snake River on a Ferry Raft, now on the west side of the river he made his way Northeast along the river and got a job breaking horses on the Berryman – Rogers ranch, that was a big change from his life on the ocean.
Independence was his desire and as he could obtain a bit of land, he was only to happy to clear it of sage brush and level it so it could be irrigated, he slowly made his own way. At one time he built a dugout in a hill near his home place now and lived in it. One morning he saw big paw tracks across his dirt roof, there were many wild animals along the river at that time among them deer and many coyotes the latter a great threat to the sheep industry he was slowly investing in. The Great Snake River was only a ½ mile or so from where he was living.
During these early years he married a young local girl but he got a divorce due to "Unhappy in differences." At this time he had built a house along one river south and west of his holdings. They lived in it a short time. So ended this part of his life.
He had acquired a team of horses and a scraper and worked on the canals that were being built, the Lavaside (he was President of the board of the Lavaside Canal for many years). The Peoples and the American Falls Canals. He has made the statement that those were very happy years as the men made the canals and ditches that carried the life giving water to the fertile but arid land. They were rewarded with bounteous crops for their labors.
He was interested in sheep ranching and as his herd grew he joined other sheep ranchers and they took their herds to the hills for summer pasture. The group became The Johnston-Severson Sheep Co, and it proved profitable, his beloved brother Peter G. Johnston had moved from Salt Lake City and was one of the owners, at various times several other men had sheep in the same herds and a lot of good trips were enjoyed by the families as they went along when special work had to be done, such as shearing the sheep, cutting out the lambs as they grew big enough to sell. They went many different places as it became necessary to move the sheep to new feed areas. These trips included members of this family.
James Green Johnston was married to Kate Ellison Bennett, a civil marriage December 17, 1902 and a Salt Lake City LDS temple marriage December 23, 1903.
To this marriage was born five children:
Norma Alice Johnston married Lawrence Taylor Lambert
Marie Bennett Johnston married Thomas Henry Randall
Kate Lavon Johnston married John Victor Briggs
James Delwin Johnston married Annabelle Obershaw
William Bennett Johnston married Died in Infancy
During the terrible winter of 1918 and 1919, an influenza epidemic was severe thruout the whole country, many died as a result of it. It was hard times because the young men had not returned home from their service in World War I. No help was available for farm work so when the entire family except Norma were bed fast with the flu and it was so cold and the roads were impassable, except for Dr. Mitchell who made one trip out by horse and sled. It just seemed to have to run its course and Kate was so very ill. The 16 of February, Kate gave birth to a beautiful baby boy and he was a delight to all the family. On March 2, 1919, James started to town to attend a Stake meeting, he was riding his horse and went a ways and turned around and came back to the home where he gave the baby a Fathers blessing and named him William Bennett Johnston. Then James got his horse and continued on to his meeting. About two hours after he left, that dear little baby boy quietly died and Dr. Mitchell said he had a defective heart as a result of the severe case of the flu that Kate had suffered. He had not been on earth long but he left a sorrowing family.
The first home James had built for Kate was a cozy log house, papered inside and comfortable and they had a good life there. James had by now many beautiful horses, both for work and pleasure. His buggy horses were spirited and he raced one named Pacer in events that were held at the Fairgrounds. This horse hitched to a sulky and with his pacing gait was a source of pleasure for the whole family. James looked the good horseman that he was, with his colors and his goggles. He always had his own saddle horse and he was so kind to the animals that he discouraged the young men around from riding his horse.
The sheep operation and farming required a lot of man power and James hired the young men of the community to work for him and thru his teaching and ensouragement mean of these men had the courage to strike out on their own and make good homes and lives for themselves and their families.
Kate had a lot of cooking to do and they hired the young girls of the community to help with the housework. Having so many young people in the same place caused a lot of love matches and marriages, with the encouragement of James and his wife Kate. A number of marriages took place in their parlor and the couples always remained their friends as they went on to make their own lives and homes. Johnstons was a happy place to be.
James built a brick house with the bricks that were made and Kiln fired along the river a short ways from his home place and as time went by he acquired more land as it was available. This house was built about 1903 and he made it completely modern with a bathroom and running water. The water system he ingeniously devised by building a tall shed, called the tank house and on top of it he put a metal lined tank, like a huge barrel and the water ran to the house and to the corral by means of gravity, he pumped the water up into the tank from a well in the shed by means of a gasoline engine. There was no electricity in the rural areas for many years and his was the only system outside the town for a long time, his family always enjoyed a comfortable way of life.
James was called to serve a mission for the Latter Day Saint Church about 1908, he accepted the call to serve in Scotland, on the mainland, he arranged for an associate in the sheep business to live in the home and look after his interests. Kate and the two little girls went to her parents home where they lived in a rental unit attached to their home, he was gone for two years, on his return they resumed life on their ranch.
He became a member of the Blackfoot Stake High Council for many years and faithfully served in that capacity, he had many friends and spoke at many funerals and missed no meetings he should attend.
Kate accepted the position of Relief Society President and served for twenty years or so, also taught Sunday School for years. As R.S. President her duties were many, they took personal care of the sick, took the part of Mortician, many times having to prepare the casket and with their husbands help did the hearse service at the death of Community members.
On beautiful spring morning when James was in Blackfoot attending a Stake meeting and Kate, Lavon, and Delwin were attending meeting in the ward building, someone burst into the church and shouted "Johnstons house is afire" Everyone went to help but it did not good as it burned and not a thing was saved. There had been no fires started in the house that morning and it was never determined what started the fire. Some one broke the big window in the parlor and it created a draft that fanned the fire as they were trying to get some of the furniture out but failed.
Jamed and Kate set up housekeeping in the big garage he had built in the barnyard and lived there all summer and were able to move into the new brick house he built on the site of the destroyed on by the time it got cold in the autumn. This house is still in good condition and a lovely place to live.
As their family grew older and married and left home, James and Kate made a regular habit of leaving home about four p.m. and going to Blackfoot, Idaho Falls or Pocatello or even Lava Hot Springs for a few hours alone, they had dinner and went to a show and in the summers warm season they went to Yellowstone Park. James had built a boat, a craft he learned from his seaman Father, they would leave the boat at Fishing Bridge, rent a Cabin an he would fish, Kate went along sometime but she had her hobbies and enjoyed the cabin and nice weather. He always caught fish and gave them to fishermen who had not been so lucky. Their mode of living continued until Kate suffered a serious heart attack, she didn’t complain and she never spent a day in bed, tho she suffer for six years, one week before her death her home smelled like heaven should as she cooked grape jelly and canned pears. She died at age 63 and James continued to live another 17 lonely years, he told people he had been blessed with the best wife a man could have. He died peacefully November 12, 1958 - age 90 years.
This family stayed united and ever grateful for happy home life with good caring parents. They had problems as everyone does but James’ philosophy of life helped them thru the dark hours and as James had done many years ago and many times later. "They handled it".

Spoke to Beverly Sullivan on 4/13/2001 -- Let her roast marshmellows in the fireplace (her first time). He had a wonderful sheep wagon. Mobile home for the shepherds and she would go out and play in it.

Asked Grandma Vonnie on 4/14/2001 - Saw her ankles, beautiful lady stepped out of the buggy (his wife was fully pregnant when he met her - this baby was given and raised by her family).
