Notes for CLAUDE LATIMORE SULLIVAN:
CLAUDE L. SULLIVAN

He purchased Lots 1-12 Block 15, So. Add., A Livery Stable in Mountain Home, in 1914. Lots 15-18 block 14 So Add (house, across street from Livery) was purchased in April 1913. The Livery was foreclosed on June 6, 1919. He sold the house on March 29, 1918 to Domingo Monasterio.
The livery was built in 1908? I found a picture of it under construction that showed that date written on it. Mother said that Claude built the Livery and the house across the street where he and family then lived during that time.

Claude was a Village Trustee of Mountain Home, Documented on Dec 9, 1915, court records, Elmore County Recorder’s Office.

Claude was Sheriff of Owyhee County for sometime. His first term in 1936, was decided by the toss of a coin, as the election was tied. Claude resigned his office in early 1950 and moved to Oregon.

Mother, Faye Randall Hawkins, and Mamie Tigard both told me that when they were very young they used to play in the loft at the Livery and also in the horse drawn hearse. Mamie told me that when her family first got to Idaho from Washington they stayed with Claude and Lou for awhile. Cattie had originally wanted to come to be closer to her mother, but by the time they finally came here grandmother Elizabeth was dead.

Spoke to Jerry on October 24, 2002 -

Loved to eat at Grandma's house. Provided with her own hands. Planted a garden, raised chickens, raised a cow, and canning food. Gene had to go to work when he was young. Her mother came and had $60 a month. That went into the pot. No one ever went away from the house hungry. She would make a pot of beans. She spent a lifetime cooking for crews, haycrews, or jailbirds. Criminals would sit down. Jewel was the deputy. Everyone sat around the table and ate with the murders and thieves. Everyone would come and eat because there was no restaurant in Murphy. In Golconda, mother opened up the boarding house. She would buy eggs by the gross in layers. 12 layers on eat side or 144 eggs. She would cook A LOT of chickens.

The boys had a pair of dress shoes and play shoes. When they came home, they hung up clothes and they would shine their shoes. She really worked to make her boys look good. She made sure they had their hair cut. At age 11 or 12, Grandma got religion and made her boys go to church. She made sure the shirts were clean and pressed to go to church.

She would buy potatoes by the 100's of pounds. Nothing wasted. She would cook the head and make head cheese. That would gel in the fridge like jello. Grind chickens up. Made own mayonaise and soap (out of bacon grease). She was a working son of a gun.

She was pretty tough too. She didn't like her boys to cry. She made them tough. She would ask if he wanted something to cry about. She expected the boys to do things. A couple of times, Jerry had blisters on his hands she cried. She was tough on him because she wanted him to make it. They had tough times but they made it through it.

Uncle George (drunken) blew the money from the sale of the farm. She discussed this with Jerry and he asked - do you want him in prison? She didn't so she tried to forget about it. The other boys whined about it.

Today is the day - the chickens. She would buy pullets. The chicks would raise up and in 6 to 8 weeks they killed them. They would eat up all the resources and get old and tough. She was a tough lady. They could kill 100's in one day.

When she was a girl, she was skinny and tall and had black hair and blue eyes. She was an athlete in school. She played softball. She wanted to go to nursing school. She loved school.

In the cab business, she saved up $6,000. The cab business belonged to an estate. So they bought the cab business and put everyone in the family to work. She drove 12 hours a day and Joe drove 12 hours a day. 12 X 7 = 84 hours a week and sometimes more.

She paid more than 10% of her earnings for tithing and she gave a like sum for fast offering. She was generous to a fault. She never had anything extra. She didn't have anything for herself.

Jerry and his mother were buddies. They had their first Christmas tree together when Jerry was 10 or 12. They didn't have any money to buy a tree when she was a kid. They lived in a little house with one room. She liked Christmas quite a bit. She tried really hard to make it nice.

One time, she had had an operation on her wrist. When they had medical things, they would travel back up to Idaho. Jerry had some money and Jerry bought her a dozen yellow roses. She started to cry. Jerry thought - what did I do wrong. That was the first time she got roses.

Jerry is glad he did not have to find the horses. For a long time, Grandma wanted a carriage and horses for her funeral. She didn't want to die. The last few years weren't too good. When she died, Jerry bought 126 dozen roses. It was 126 dozen because that was all he could find. It would have been a thousand if he could have found them.

She could really milk cows. She would mild cows before school. She didn't really have a chance to be a girl - skipped her childhood and went to work.

Jerry was talking to Horton the other day. Horton was really sick and here came Myra with a pot full of beans. Henry Barry knew that Myra wanted to go to Europe. Henry said he would throw that in the pot and drive her shift for her while she was gone. So Henry Barry sent Myra to Europe.

Myra would campaign for Jerry. She would stand outside the super market and hand out cards and grab them by the arm and tell them to vote for my son. She would make sure they got the card. Jerry has a photo of her in front of her house in front of the big Vote For Judge Sullivan sign. He puts in on his mirror so he sees it every morning to remind him. When Dad wanted to be the judge, his two strong women - his wife and his mother didn't want him to run but they supported him like he was going to win. This time around in the campaign, Beverly really encouraged him and pushed him. Dad was knocking doors in Golconda the other day and remembering. He saw the old house and the house next door where Frank and Bea lived. Grandma made a home.

Dad took care of the house while Grandma was alive. Dad planted all the trees and the grass. Beverly and Jerry went to Idaho and went to the nursery and picked out the plants and Grandma bought them. He went with Grandma to buy furniture and cars.

It will be hard to be as good a person as her. Grandma and Beverly both wanted Jerry to go to church. He didn't want to have anything to do with it. But they never quit, they both cried and stuck with it so that he would continue to go.

Dad built a house for Beverly. They bought things as they went along. Brother Gene knew where to go. They went over to the window factory and bought windows that were screwed up or had something wrong with them. They would go over to Idaho and buy bathtubs or stuff that was cheap to build the house. One time the windows blew off and broke. One time the stuff was on the trailer and it wasn't over the axle. The truck was pulling the stuff up the hill. Dad told Diana - If I say jump bail out if the truck starts sliding down the hill. It took a long time to build the house a little at a time.

Spoke to Jerry on January 4, 2002 -

Grandma Myra was a caretaker. She took care of her father until he died of cancer and she took care of her mother for 15 years until she died. Lavern was an invalid and required constant care. Juanita was a baby and would sit up on the bed with Grandma Lavern and watch TV.
