At First Sight

(Imagine Sarah McLachlin's "I Love You" playing in the background) "I have a smile stretched from ear to ear to see you walking down the road, we meet at the lights, I stare for a while, the world around us disappears, just you and me on my island of hope, a breath between us could be miles, let me surround you my sea to your shore, let me be the calm you seek, oh and every time I'm close to you, there's too much I can't say and you just walk away, and I forgot to tell you I love you and the night's too long and cold here without you, I grieve in my condition for I cannot find the words to say I need you so, oh and every time I'm close to you there's too much I can't say and you just walk away, and I forgot to tell you I love you and the night's too long and cold here without you." *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* The chilly night closed in on seven o'clock as Angel silently followed the new Slayer home. He didn't even know her name, and it didn't matter to him. Seeing her in action less than an hour before made him realize how important this Slayer would be to him. He'd encountered other Slayers before this one. He'd even killed a few in his day. This one, with her beauty, strength, innocence and youth, made his heart beat when it normally wouldn't. He wanted to help her. And he would personally see to it that she outlived her predecessors. But Angel never expected it to be love at first sight. From the moment he saw her on the front steps of her school, Angel felt something he'd never felt before - true and pure love. He thought he was in love before, but not like this. With Darla, it had been companionship. She created him. They ravaged Europe together, ravaged each other, well over a century ago. She knew him, how to push his buttons and bring out the worst in him. The fun they had turned out to be just that - fun. Angel was no longer able to face his sire. Drusilla. Angel frowned at the thought of her. It still saddened him to think of all he had put that poor girl through. She became his obsession; his best creation. And his worst. Killing her family and driving her insane still haunted Angel. Tormented him into believing it was the worst thing he had ever done as a vampire. For the first time in ages, Angel felt like a man. A man with hope. The Slayer was his hope. She, and only she, could make him change into the man he wanted to become. He swore to himself that he wouldn't let this opportunity pass him by. Nothing could stand in his way. Almost as if she sensed him behind her, the Slayer stopped and glanced over her shoulder suspiciously. Angel quickly ducked into the shadows so she didn't see him. Though her search came up empty, she increased her pace. He struggled to keep up with her, as Angel wasn't up to full strength yet. The vampire managed to keep her in his line of sight, thanks only to his incredible night vision. When she reached her house, Angel remained outside, watching through the windows from behind a group of trees. The Slayer was talking with her mother. Even though he wasn't able to hear what they were discussing, Angel could sense her sadness. Her mother left the room and the new Slayer, Angel's new hope, stared at herself in the bathroom mirror. It seemed as though she was looking right at him, seeing his heart and soul bared for only her to see. But he cast no reflection. Then he saw the tears in her eyes. "No. Don't be upset," he reassured softly, not caring that she couldn't hear him. What's wrong? Why is she crying?? Angel assumed it had to be the realization that her life would never be the same. Her whole life had changed in one instant. He wanted to make her pain go away; wanted her never to feel anger, hurt, fear or shame again. He wanted her to love him the way he loved her. It would be a long time before Angel could do that. He stood there watching her for what seemed like forever, but not nearly long enough. He watched as she ate dinner with her parents in silence. Watched her do her homework; watched as she stared off into space. Watched her sleep. She plagued his thoughts. Angel could think of nothing else but her on his way back to the sewers. The decision was made the very instant Angel saw the beautiful Slayer. He would change. For her. Become something worthwhile. That's exactly what he planned to tell Whistler. The Slayer, who he would later learn was called Buffy, was meant for him. She was his salvation... The End 1
