A solitary figure stood over the fresh grave. The dirt still damp from the afternoon showers. The moon glowed dimmly above, almost as if it knew of the loss. Kneeling, he traced the inscription carved in stone with the fingertips of his left hand. -THE CHOSEN ONE- Pieces of an old song drift on the breeze from an open window a little ways away. 'Just yesterday morning they let me know you were gone. Suzanne, the plans they made put an end to you.' A fitting tribute for someone of her calling. Death had stolen her, ignoring all the plans she had. Refusing her a real life, where people would know of her sacrifices. Instead her life was snuffed out because of someone else's plans. And nothing could change that. I seen fire and I seen rain. I seen sunny days that I thought would never end. I seen lonely times when I could not find a friend, But I always thought that I'd see you again. He had come as quickly as he could. Dropping everything in a rush to get here and say goodbye before she died. But he didn't make it. She expired only hours before he arrived. He had carefully advoided the scooby gang. Her friends. They were inconsiquential. Only she had mattered. The slayer. My body's aching and my time is at hand. I won't make it any other way. He would have done everything in his power to save her. Everything. Be it magic or changing her. He would have done it without thinking. She would have hated him for it, but at least she'd still be alive. He didn't sense the other man coming, but he was aware of him the moment he stopped by his side. Yet, he never glanced up. Just continued to kneel on the grave and contemplate what she had been. I seen fire and I seen rain. I seen sunny days that I thought would never end. I seen lonely times when I could not find a friend, But I always thought that I'd see you again. "Didn't expect you here." the other man broke into his thoughts. "She was the only worthy opponent. The ONLY one!" he replied, voice low. Standing, he continued to stare down at the tombstone. "I loved her. Always...I..." the sobs were disquieting. "I know Angel. And she did too." he placed his hand on his sire's shoulder. A gesture of comfort. Silence came again and they stood like that until the sun began to rise. Angel took his leave, but the younger one stayed. "I'll always remember you." he whispered."My only worthy opponent. Slayer...Buffy!" The song continued. My back turned towards the sun... Time passed and the sun rose in the clear blue sky. But I always thought that I'd see you again. As the song faded away, the ashes of a once fearsome vampire settled on the grave of his once mortal enemy. The End 1
