My grandmother (on my dad's side) lives quite a distance away- 400 miles. It's not far enough to be cheaper to fly 5 people than drive, and yet, it's enough to take an entire day to get there in the car. She doesn't come to visit much because 1)she has never liked planes, and 9/11 didn't help and 2)the drive down here is a bit much for a woman her age- the traffic is hard for me to handle a lot of the time, as well. So, when she comes here, it's quite a big deal. It was a few years ago, when I was still in the 8th grade, that she came to visit and we all went out to dinner at some Thai restaurant. There, she gave me a silver ring. It's a simple little thing with an ovular, flat top (kind of reflective because it's silver and flat) and the sides have little holes in it that form a pretty cool design. However simple it is, though, I never take it off. I only take it off for 2 reasons- special occasions where it isn't appropriate/pretty enough (like prom) and the second, when I think it will get damaged (like winter guard performances... requires catching the flags and stuff... it could get bent). I get tanlines on my finger every summer in the same spot on the ring finger on my right hand. I don't even take it off for piano recitals where rings aren't appropriate. My piano teacher is used to it though... I normally wear rings on both hands, and then a watch. Every week, before I play, I'd take off my watch, and the ring on my left hand. Never the silver ring. I can't help but look at it as I type this out. I'm such a sentimental sap, but we could use a few more of those in this world. :P
