What will Kansas do to embarass itself next? It's bad enough that the state is known as some great frontierland that just got electricity in 1983 and where tornadoes and wicked witches run rampant. Now the State Board of Education is turning Kansas, typically not even seen as part of the Bible Belt (that's the deep South), into a theocracy. Recently the Board voted to deemphasize the teaching of the theory of evolution in public school science courses, effectively calling it a sham. As a moderate conservative I am appalled that those on the far right of the political spectrum could be so stupid. Evolution should be taught in public schools, but it is a theory and should be taught as one. It is just that there is so much evidence to support it it cannot be ignored. Creationism can be taught in private schools and churches but has no place in a secular classroom. Contrary to Moses appearing on our seal, this is an instance of forcing religion upon those who may not wish it. On the other hand, I am offended when scientists such as the late, great Carl Sagan call the notion that God created the universe and humans quackery. They are free to believe what they wish but it is not possible to rule out the theory of divine creation. Personally when I witness the miracles of life and consider how amazing it all is I see more proof for some sort of master behind the scenes. What I do not understand is why both many scientists and radical Christians refuse to accept that evolution and God are perfectly compatible. Neither theory rules the other out. Many scientists and religions do understand this. Catholics, Jews, and many Protestants all see evolution as a valid theory if God is behind it. Catholic doctrine is that we do not know exactly how long it took God to make the world and humans or how he did it, we just know that he did. In other words, we care about the ends, not the means. If Darwinian evolution is an accepted theory of human development then so be it. Come on, Kansas. Wake up, we're not Puritans--by being more receptive of valid scientific theories those who do not believe in divine creator will be more tolerant of those that do. There is no reason why everyone cannot cooperate on this matter. |
