DISCLAIMER and CREDITS
DISCLAIMER
All results in this guide have been compiled by me from
various sources (principally the
BBC and national newspapers). I believe that all figures and
facts given here are correct (including the credits, which are my
own opinions). If you find a mistake in the figures/writing,
contact me and I will
do what I can to help. However, I will accept NO (no)
responsibility for:
- Investigating the source of the mistake
- Correcting the mistake
- Any of the consequences of using information provided by
me which is later found to be incorrect
- Damage which has been incurred to this website in transit,
or
- Anything else you or your lawyer can think up.
This website is provided on an "as is" basis and you
should use at your own peril. (Sorry: "risk".) So
there.
Now that legal paragraph is over with, I freely admit there
are mistakes. The figures given for the votes cast for the major
parties in the General Election are almost certainly incorrect
(they differ from other published data), which is a consequence
of incorrect addition. Since the addition involved is the
summation of 641 (six hundred and forty-one) different statistics
for each of the big three parties, all of them consisting of
numbers of four or five figures, there is no way I am going back
to add it up again and get it right this time. I do not have a
lot of free time and am currently studying for a mathematics degree at Warwick
University.
However, I advise that the figures are approximately correct;
rounding off to (say) the nearest 1 or 10 thousand will be good
enough for most purposes and roughly equal to the actual result.
CREDITS (in no particular order):
- J. Whitaker and Sons, for producing Whitaker's Almanack which provided me with a copy of the '92 election results
(and the '97 results as well) and got me into this
whole game in the first place
- British Broadcasting Corporation Television News for
providing the nation with outstanding election night
coverage, dodgy (sometimes seriously dodgy!) computer predictions and the inimitable
Peter Snow
- BBC News 24 for being completely consistent in mucking up
coverage of every single election they do
- The Times and The Independent for
giving me the Scottish Parliament and Welsh Assembly
election results but not giving me the abbreviations they
used (thanks a bundle)
- The Internet for making STV election results available
for every count (NOT AVAILABLE IN ANY SHOPS)
- The European Parliament for winning the Worst Website
Design In The World Award by several miles. (No link is
given in protest.) Why should I have to search the list
of MEPs eight times to find the party strength
in the European Parliament?
- My father for throwing out the Daily Telegraph
supplement I originally tried adding up the 1997 results
from.
- Commodore-Amiga, Inc., for providing me with the Amiga
A1200, a great and sadly neglected machine the first two
versions of this website were drafted on. (It had 2MB RAM
and ran off floppies, which was quite a good deal when it was made in
1990, so you will find no pictures here.)
- Sen. George Mitchell for doing so much for peace in
Northern Ireland and making me change the Peace Process
section every other day
- The Provisional Irish Republican Army: Look, all you have
to do is hand over your guns, ammo, Semtex, etc. and we
can all live happily ever after
- Peter Mandelson: The best hate figure you could hope
to get
- Screaming Lord Sutch: The most sensible politician
Britain ever had, in a Raving Loony way...
